  Some critics of the sugar baby lifestyle say it's anti-feminist and degrading toward women. But Brook Urick of SeekingArrangement said critics of the lifestyle don't see how beneficial sugar baby relationships are for everyone involved. Urick told Dazed:

  [Critics] assume people are being victimized or it's illegal. There's so much negativity around women who act like men and who are looking out for themselves and maybe use their relationships to their advantage. All the women on the site are sex positive. They're using their bodies if and when they want to and making sure it's on their own terms. There's no rule where there has to be sex involved. They're simply owning their relationships.

  Joannie, an attendee at the 2018 Sugar Baby Summit, described herself as a feminist to The Independent and explained why:

  In my normal life I'm very extremely independent and I don't really like to get help from people. So for me to make the choice to be like, "You know what, I'm gonna allow someone to take care of me," it's kind of nice.

  So what's the difference between a gold digger and a sugar baby? Some might argue they're the same and the sugar baby community simply, well, sugarcoats any differences. But according to RichMeetBeautiful, a sugar dating website, although both gold diggers and sugar babies seek relationships with wealthy men, their motives and methods are different.

  A gold digger, the website says, is less upfront about asking for funds, often playing the victim. She is lazy, doesn't have goals beyond taking someone's money, and will resort to deceptive tactics to get what she wants. She cares only about a man's ability to offer material goods and isn't seeking a deeper connection or real companionship.

  But a sugar baby has goals and uses the relationship to advance her career or fulfill other aspirations. She is honest and classy, and willing to give as well as take.

  Many sugar babies say the biggest misconception is they're in an abusive relationship or being used in some way. While their relationships might not be traditional, babies and daddies have found something that works for them - a partnership with clearly defined roles based on open communication, which is rare in our society.

  Sugar babies have to watch out for certain types of wannabe daddies who don't follow the rules. "Splenda daddies" are men who want to be sugar daddies, but don't have the money to do so. Just like artificial sugar, Splenda daddies can be sweet, but they're just not the real thing.

  "Salt daddies" are those who lie about being rich, or have money, but are stingy about spending it. They've got more bite and sting than their sweeter Splenda counterparts.

  The range of sugar relationships is as broad as the sexuality spectrum. It's not just gorgeous young women and silver foxes who make these connections. Men and women of all ages and sexual preferences, whether or not they look like supermodels, can be sugar babies or daddies/mamas.

  Jezebel spoke with a male sugar baby named Ja'Breyon who got into the business with help from an older woman, but mostly meets up with men. He explained he likes to be the dominant force in the relationship: "Let me show you how to enjoy your life."

  A lawyer in her 40s told Refinery29 she became a sugar mama because her career didn't leave time for traditional dating, and she was "getting a little too old" for dates that flamed out:

  I did want to find that intimacy physically, but I didn't want to be just trying in bars... So I decided that it would be good to have these arrangements where I could have companionship and regular company. It was just an easier way to meet my lifestyle and what I needed right now.
