Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryūsai was the 1st Division captain of Gotei 13. While he looks like a helpless, elderly man, Yamamoto was actually an aggressive fighter with a surprisingly muscular physique. He was also a highly respected captain among his peers who passionately believed in the Soul Society. His fiery passion was matched by his Bankai, Shigekuni Yamamoto-Genryūsai, which allowed him to control the fires of Hell.

While everyone on Earth might know Kisuke Urahara as a mere salesman, he was actually the former captain of the 12 Division in Gotei 13. Urahara was instrumental in teaching Ichigo his Shinigami powers, while also training his friends after their spiritual powers awakened. While he’s usually polite and laid back, he becomes ecstatic over things he’s passionate about. Fitting for his lascivious nature, his Bankai, the Kannonbiraki Benihime Aratame, takes the form a beautiful giant woman that can restructure anything to his whim.

Byakuya Kuchiki, the brother of Rukia, is the captain of the 6th Division. Despite his icy demeanor, Byakuya cares deeply for his friends and for Rukia. He is often internally conflicted with upholding the laws of the Soul Society versus doing what’s morally right. Byakuya is highly feared for his skills and rightly so. His Senbonzakura Kageyoshi attack can summon thousands of blades and have them instantly rain down on his enemy like a hail storm.

(#7) Yoruichi Shihouin

Formerly the captain of the 2nd Division, Yoruichi Shihouin is a beautiful woman who aided Ichigo throughout the Soul Society arc. While she is of noble birth, Yoruichi is more playful and flirtatious than most royals. She specifically liked teasing Ichigo with her nude form, whenever she transformed from a black cat to human. Amongst her greatest skill is her agility, allowing her to appear at several places at once to wipe out a squad. Yoruichi is also skilled in manipulating lightning to power up her arms and legs for combat.

Shunsui Kyōraku is the laid back captain of the First division. While he prefers to be a peaceful man, Shunsui won’t insult his opponents by refusing to fight them. He has a love for theatrics and for Nanao Ise, the co-lieutenant of the First Division. Shunsui is one of the most proficient swordsmen in all of Soul Society; backed up by his Katen Kyōkotsu.

Tōshirō Hitsugaya is the no-nonsense captain of the 10th Division. Despite his child-like appearance, Tōshirō detests anything he deems childish. Even though he is against immaturity from the other Shinigami, he will not lash out unless it’s over something unjust. He is also very protective of his childhood friend, Momo Hinamori. Tōshirō’s ice-based Bankai, the Daiguren Hyōrinmaru, unleashed an icy dragon that’s wrapped around his hand.

Gin Ichimaru, former captain of the 3rd Division, is anything but another face amongst the crowd. Gin’s slitted eyes, apathetic attitude, and eerie smile often gave others the impression that he was a dishonest snake. Similarly, Gin’s Bankai is also mysterious. It isn’t obvious at first glance, but while his Bankai is activated, Gin becomes increasingly stronger to the point of bringing down a building with a single slash.

Who could have guessed that Ichigo’s crazy dad was not only a Shinigami, but also the former captain of the 10th Division? While Isshin is an outrageous father to his son and two daughters, he was a well-respected captain until he sacrificed his Shinigami powers to save the life of Masaki, Ichigo’s mother. He wasn’t just a great fighter, but a great healer too, which is why he became a doctor for his human life on Earth.

5th Division captain Shinji Hirako is a bit of a troublemaker. He enjoys teasing Hiyori Sarugaki and likes to flirt with every woman he sees (except for Hiyori). However, there is a serious side to Shinji, as evidenced by his distrust of Aizen (which he was right about, in the end). Shinji has the power to invert his opponent’s sense of direction through his Sakanade; confusing their actions midbattle.

Jūshirō Ukitake was the former captain of the 13th Division in Gotei 13. Despite his lung disease turning his hair white and causing him to occasionally cough up blood, Ukitake didn’t let it get in the way of him becoming a Shinigami. He was admired by his peers for his honorable personality; always showing forgiveness and trying to help others in need. The most notable thing about Ukitake is that he was the vessel for the Right Arm of the Soul King.

Mayuri Kurotsuchi is the 12 Division captain and “mad scientist” of Gotei 13. His appearance his monstrous and his attitude towards others is cold. He views everyone as nothing more than potential subjects for his experiments, including Nemu Kurotsuchi, who is his lieutenant and artificially-created “daughter.” Mayuri’s Bankai, the Konjiki Ashisogi Jizō, is just as creepy and deadly as Mayuri himself, with its poisonous caterpillar baby appearance.

(#15) Ginrei Kuchiki
Ginrei Kuchiki, the grandfather of Byakuya, was the 6th Division captain over 100 years ago. He was the 27th head of the Kuchiki Clan, which is one of the four noble families in the Soul Society. Ginrei presents himself in a respectable manner and doesn’t react with rash actions. As an elder and respectable figure in the Soul Society, Ginrei has high amounts of spirit energy for battle and high intelligence for leadership.

Kensei Muguruma is the 9th Division captain of Gotei 13. While caring, Kensei can easily become irritable by the immaturity of others. Even his acts of kindness can be offset by his militant demeanor. Kensei is especially aggressive on the battlefield; confessing he’s too immature to hold back. He has the power to manipulate wind and energy through his special combat knife.

Before he betrayed the Soul Society, Kaname Tōsen was the 9th Division captain of Gotei 13. Even though he was born blind, Tōsen’s disability doesn’t get in the way of his fighting. Through the use of his Bankai, Suzumushi Tsuishiki: Enma Kōrogi, he can nullify the senses of his opponents to make them helpless in battle. However, Tōsen preferred taking the path with the least bloodshed.

Rukia Kuchiki, the leading lady of the Bleach anime series, is the 13 Division captain of Gotei 13. She’s small, petite, and tomboyish. Rukia can be serious and modest one minute and childish the next, such as her unsubtle obsession with cute rabbits. Until she met Ichigo, Rukia had a hard time opening up to anyone, due to her impoverished background and complicated relationship with her brother, Byakuya. Rukia’s Bankai, the Hakka no Togame, allows her to become a literal ice queen and deliver attacks of absolute zero degrees.

Far from being a talking dog, Sajin Komamura is the anthropomorphic wolf captain of the 7th Division. While his animal appearance might intimidate others, Sajin is actually a caring and surprisingly self-conscious individual. He is also a very loyal person, particularly to Yamamoto for taking him in. Sajin’s greatest ace-in-the-hole attack is summoning a giant samurai warrior through Kokujō Tengen Myō'ō: Dangai Jōe.

Soi Fon is the strict, but hard-working captain of the 2nd Division in the Gotei 13. She’s a morally strong and humble woman who will always fight for what she believes in, even if it means going up against her own subordinates. Although Soi Fon felt betrayed by Yoruichi Shihouin in the past, the two have amended their relationship and now it’s stronger (and more passionate) than ever. Soi Fon’s Bankai, the Jakuhō Raikōben, is a golden missile of mass destruction.

(#21) Lisa Yadoumaru
Formerly the lieutenant of Shunsui, Lisa Yodoumaru is the captain of the 8th Division. She is quite calm and sensible, but also easily irritable. Surprisingly, Lisa also has a thing for lewd comics. Lisa is extremely agile and highly skilled with her Zanpakutō, and can easily wield it with her left or right hand. She also has the stamina to wield her Zanpakutō when it transforms into a giant weapon that resembles a monk’s blade.

Love Aikawa, also known as simply “Love,” was the former captain of the 7th Division. Love is a carefree man who enjoys Shōnen Jump and erotic manga (from Lisa’s stash) alike. He’s also friends with Love, as the two often talk about music. His normal-looking katana with the heart-shaped hilt transforms into a giant Japanese war club.

(#23) Rōjūrō Otoribashi
Rōjūrō “Rose” Otoribashi is the 3rd Division captain of Gotei 13. Much like Shunsui, Rose is a laid back man who would prefer to listen to music or read a good manga than fight. However, Rose is also a skilled swordsman like Shunsui and won’t roll over for anyone. As you may have guessed by the nickname, Rose’s skill as a fighter comes from his excellent use of his golden whip with a flowery spiked tip.

Syūsuke Amagai succeeded Gin as captain of the 3rd Division of Gotei 13. Based on his shaggy hair and chin stubble, Amagai is a sloppy guy. Nonetheless, he is a respectful captain who will bend the rules every now and then to help someone out. Amagi’s an amazing swordsman with unbelievable teleportation powers.
