Robb Stark begins to fall in love with a female nurse on the battlefield, despite the fact that he has strategically promised to marry one of Walder Frey's daughters.
Arya, Gendry, and her friend Hot Pie are taken to Harrenhall where they are put to work by Tywin Lannister and Arya is made his personal cupbearer.
After almost starving in the desert of the Red Waste, Daenerys and her remaining Dothraki entourage arrive at the city of Qarth. The Qartheen people are at first reluctant to believe that she is the Mother of Dragons, but she is eventually let into the city by a friendly member of their council.
Littlefinger meets with Catelyn Stark and proposes she trade Jaime Lannister for her daughters.
Meanwhile, Melisandre gives birth to Stannis's son, a shadowy smoke creature.

(#7) A Man Without Honor

In King's Landing, Sansa finds that she has had her first period, meaning she must now have sex with Joffrey to bear his children.
In Robb's camp, Jaime Lannister murders his own cousin and the jailer who comes to investigate as part of a plan to escape. He is recaptured, and the jailer's father, Rickard Karstark, demands he be killed.
In Qarth, Dany investigates what has happened to her dragons, and finds that they were stolen by a warlock named Pyat Pree.
In Winterfell, Theon finds that Bran, Rickon, Osha, and Hodor have escaped. He orders his men to investigate, and after a long search, reveals to the citizens of Winterfell what he claims to be the charred remains of the two Stark boys, saying he killed them, rather than admit they escaped.

(#8) The Prince of Winterfell

Tyrion prepares King's Landing for Stannis Baratheon's attack, while Joffrey continues to act foolish. Stannis prepares his fleet for the attack and names his companion Davos Seaworth the next Hand of the King once he takes the throne. Beyond the Wall, Jon Snow has been captured by wildlings and decides to act as a spy for the Night's Watch by pretending to betray them to earn the wildlings' trust.
Theon's decision to kill the Stark boys causes his father and sister to abandon him in Winterfell. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Bran and Rickon are actually alive. Theon had murdered and burned two farmer's children when he couldn't find the Starks.

(#2) The Night Lands

Jon Snow and the Night's Watch have taken shelter with the wildling Craster and his daughter-wives. Craster keeps himself safe from harm by sacrificing all of his male children to the white walkers, keeping the daughters for himself.
In King's Landing, Tyrion makes his first moves as Hand of the King, promoting Bronn to "commander of the watch."
Theon Greyjoy reunites with his family after nine years as the Stark's ward. He finds that his father hates him for his Northern ways, and has plans to take the Iron Throne by force.

Robb Stark marries the nurse Talisa, even though he has promised himself to the daughter of Walder Frey, much to the disdain of his mother. In Qarth, Daenerys travels to the House of the Undying to recover her dragons from Pyat Pree. There, she murders him, retrieves her dragons and seals up those who betrayed her in a vault. In Winterfell, Theon is betrayed by his own men and the castle is burned to the ground.
Jaqen and Arya successfully escaped Harrenhal. Before changing his face and leaving, Jaqen gives Arya a rare coin, teaching her the phrase "valar morghulis," which means, "all men must die." Beyond the wall, the Night's Watch is attacked by white walkers.

Catelyn Stark travels to meet with Renly Baratheon in order to propose a truce with him. While she is visiting, a powerful female warrior named Brienne of Tarth earns the right to be in Renly's guard. Despite the fact that he is gay (not openly, though everyone suspects), Renly has taken Margaery Tyrell of the powerful Tyrell family as his wife.
On the Iron Islands, Theon Greyjoy swears allegiance to his father, and denounces the Starks who raised him.
In the caravan bound for the Wall, Arya and her friends are attacked by men who wish to kill Gendry, her companion and the bastard of Robert Baratheon. During the battle, Arya frees a mysterious man named Jaqen H'ghar.
