  • (#1) The Devil's Ball

Who needs sleep, right? One quick glance at this legitimate nightmare fuel and you immediately wish you could unsee it. Every new image is creepier than the last and there's no way Lucifer's parties are anywhere as creepy as this.

The Devil probably looks at this and exclaims "I'm evil, but not this evil," and then sleeps with the lights on for a solid week.

  • (#2) Bimbo's Initiation

    • Short Film

"Wanna be a member, wanna be a member?" ask the creepy white-clothed individuals to the freaked out Bimbo. Besides having a total Klan-y vibe, the group tries to torment and slay Bimbo until he agrees to join their club.

It all ends with the other club members shedding their white robes to reveal an incredibly saggy Betty Boop who finally convinces Bimbo to join by waving around like one of those inflatable people.

  • (#3) Swing You Sinners

Can a dog and a chicken make babies? That seems to be one of the main points of this doozy of an old-timey cartoon. After a few unsuccessful attempts to choke the chicken, the fowl jumps into the pants of our lead dog hero thing. Even though they are facing opposite directions, the chicken still jumps out followed by a bunch of little chicklets.

The animated God in this cartoon must look down on different species relations because the dog stumbles into a graveyard where he's reminded through a bunch of singing spirits that he's going to perish. And then, it's rather brutally demonstrated to the dog just how seriously the spirits mean business.

  • (#4) The Peanut Vendor

You know how in horror movies, characters sometimes stumble upon a cursed video tape that shows something horrific, and then that horrific thing comes to life and slays them all? This experimental animated film would work well in that capacity.

Quick, Hollywood, put this creepy monkey creature in a horror movie and you will have the next great horror icon that can stand side-by-side with such terrifying creations like Jason Voorhees or Michael Myers. And for heaven's sake, buy some of his peanuts before he gets you!

  • (#5) Left To Right

Imagine this: you're slowly drifting off to sleep. You're seconds away from a blissful dream, when suddenly, you hear the noise of the moon going through a meat grinder, followed by the creepiest carnival music you can imagine.

You don't have to imagine this, however, because it actually happens in this cartoon. It's nothing short of wild. Not only this, in the video life evolves and changes out of this wormlike silly putty. Some of the creations and events that you see transpire in this short cartoon (like the constant eating and pooping out an apple by all the creatures, or the one creature punching bits off another gelatinous blob of mass) is probably what inspired Tim Burton in his early days, or possibly even Jeffrey Dahmer.

  • (#6) Cameraman's Revenge

Anything from the early 1900s that boasts "Amazing Puppet Animation" is sure to be terrifying and Cameraman's Revenge certainly delivers on the creepy front. If you've gone your whole life without seeing a puppet show that highlights bug infidelity, then you just aren't living.

Just remember that these are all ACTUAL deceased bugs the puppeteer is working with, which naturally makes the whole thing 10 times weirder.

  • (#7) Hell's Bells

Where to even begin with this one? The spider going after the camera before flames suddenly grab it and yank it down to a fiery doom? The snake eating the bat and then becoming a snake-bat hybrid? The dragon/cow with a massive udder that little demons yank on so fire spits out?

Yeah...this is definitely one of those levels of Hell Dante was referring to. At least the Devil perishes at the end, but then again, where would he go?

  • (#8) Hold Anything

This might seem like a lighthearted cartoon about a man working a construction site with the help of his animal friends, but in reality, it's nothing short of sadistic. This weird monkey lead character named Bosco has no problem using his animals for musical instruments, much to the delight of his girlfriend.

Whether it be chopping off the head of a mouse in order to make different noises on a wobbly saw or grabbing and squeezing the air out of a recently inflated goat so it sounds like pipe organs, there's no end to this master's cruelty and general disregard for life.

  • (#9) Ugokie-Kori-No-Tatehiki

If you had to choose one moment to sum up this baffling 1933 Japanese cartoon, it would have to be the moment where the fox-like bear (or is it a bear-like fox?) disappears from this plane of existence and appears again as a three-eyed humanoid creature. Next to him, his little companion does the same thing, but comes out looking like a potato that was left too long in Chernobyl and has grown sentient.

This cartoon is proof that Japan has always known how to out-freak their cartoon competitors.

  • (#10) Spooks

As Flip the Frog dines with the skeleton, pay close attention to the permanent smile plastered all over the skeleton's face. It's like a bad omen, a deathly figure waiting for its prime opportunity to strike. It just stares ahead at Flip and barely moves.

Maybe the skeleton was a dental hygienist who perished sucking up a lethal amount of laughing gas and now the skeleton is stuck like that.

  • (#11) Magic Mummy

What starts off as a normal tale of cops serenading their prisoners with sappy love songs quickly takes an odd turn as a creepy wizard takes a beautiful mummified corpse. The wizard's goal apparently is to revive the mummy back to her beautiful human form so it can sing a duet in front of a skeletal audience.

The cops follow the wizard and try to get the mummy back, but in the end, when one of the cops proudly returns the tomb, he opens it up and makes a ghastly discovery.

  • (#12) The Skeleton Dance

If you're ever in the mood to just watch skeletons dance for an extended period of time, this is the video for you. Even though the cartoon is called The Skeleton Dance, and it features (naturally) dancing skeletons, they aren't the creepiest part of this video.

Wait until you see the dog that gets blown up like a balloon, only to let it all out at the moon in one ferocious howl. It's the type of howl you would hear right before being chased by a werewolf or hellhound, not some average mutt off the street.

  • (#13) Fox And Rabbit

The message of this tale might be pleasant and the animation fascinating, but Fox and Rabbit does feature a scene where the rabbit is face down crying in a pitch-black forest, surrounded by silence save for the sound of her own tears.

It's haunting, creepy, and strangely beautiful all at the same time. Moreover, the way some of the characters stare into the lens is pretty unsettling - almost like they are staring into you.

About This Tool

Recalling childhood, most people still remember the feeling of waiting for the classic cartoon show to start on Saturday morning. The most anticipated thing every day is to watch one or two episodes of funny and interesting animation shows, and sometimes some people were scared by the animated characters or stories that they dare not sleep at night.

The random tool lists 13 creepy old cartoons that were a nightmare for many kids, dim picture colors, blurry picture quality, or scary background music can make people creepy. We still do not recommend that you watch these ancient classics in the middle of the night alone.
