    Harlow removed infant monkeys from their biological mothers just hours after they were born. Initially, the babies were split between two types of surrogate mother machines. One was made of mesh wire and the other was made of wood covered in soft terrycloth.

    Each surrogate was the same size. Typically, both types of surrogate mothers were capable of nourishing the monkeys with milk, but in some experiments only the wire mothers dispensed milk.

    "He's back on the cloth mother, and he'll stay on the cloth mother. Actually, this baby spends 17 to 18 hours a day on the cloth mother and less than one hour a day on the wire mother."

    Those with terrycloth mothers who were put in stressful situations reacted normally and  attached themselves to their mothers to gain reassurance. If they were scared, they would cuddle with their terrycloth mothers for comfort.

    In contrast, monkeys raised by wire mesh mothers had problems coping with threatening situations. They would slam themselves onto the floor, scream, and attempt to sooth themselves by rocking back and forth. They did not seek out their wire mothers for comfort.

    When Harlow exposed a calm monkey to the apparatus, the primate screamed and immediately jumped onto the cloth mother, behaving in the same way that a human child might in a similar situation. The mother helped the monkey rid himself of fear.

    "Contact with his mother changes his entire personality. Look, now he's actually threatening the diabolical object," Harlow pointed out. The monkey was bolstered by motherly contact.

    In another experiment, Harlow and his team filled a six-foot room with toys and other objects. The space may have seemed innocuous but to a baby monkey or human child, the new and strange environment was extremely scary.

    Harlow demonstrated in a video how a monkey behaved after entering the room without his mother. The primate was very cautious, disturbed, and unable to comfort himself. He laid down on the floor and made whimpering noises.

    The experimenters removed the monkey and placed a wire mother inside. When they returned the wire-nursed young monkey, he did not seek comfort from his wire surrogate.

    They performed the same task with a cloth mother in the room. When the monkey entered, he immediately clung to the cloth surrogate even though he was nursed by the wire mother. The monkey eventually felt secure enough to start exploring the room.

    The psychologist determined that for baby monkeys, the adverse effects could be altered only if they were isolated for less than 90 days. He concluded the human equivalent would be six months.

    When it came to a choice between wire and cloth, it seems obvious that a primate would choose the more comfortable mother as a source of solace. Harlow noted that there was a strong connection between love and a feeling of security.

    Later on in his career, Harlow took his experimentation a step further by locking some monkeys in boxes for nearly a year. He determined that the environment traumatized the babies and led to crippling psychological behavior. Harlow and one of his students, Stephen Suomi, also developed what became known as the "pit of despair."

    Their twisted creation was a dark metal box that completely isolated primates. The monkeys who were locked inside went insane within days. They ripped out their own fur, bit themselves, and tore their skin apart. When the researchers removed the monkeys from the boxes, some were so disturbed that they refused to eat and died of starvation.
