  • (#9) Maybe They Only Had Five Pork Chops

    From Ann:

When I was in high school I remember being at my friend's house, just hanging out after school. When dinner time came, and I was still there, my friend would go in & eat w/ her family. I waited outside. I don’t remember her mother ever asking me if I’d like to join them…or if I was hungry.

I think it was just the way her mother was. She didn’t like giving me a ride home either, even though I lived pretty far away. Other friends' mothers would at least ask if I was hungry. And I was welcome to join them. Depends on the family. Hey, if you only got 5 pork chops, you only got 5 pork chops.

  • (#16) Make Room For More

    From Meredith:

As a Chinese, I learnt from my parents that guests who come by before or during our meal are always invited to eat with the family. If we are yet to prepare the meal and know there won't be enough food for everyone, we would go out and buy extra dishes so everyone can be fed and get full.

    Jojo added:

As we Chinese always say, it’s just add one more pair of chopsticks 多個人多雙筷… and for real better when there’s more people dine together that means more dishes.

  • (#4) The Grandkids Got The Treats

    From Teresa:

We had some friends from the neighborhood, whenever we would go to their grandparent's house they would give them a treat. We were told to wait outside for them to be done with their treat.

That was the first time I realized that I was considered different. And not in a good way.

  • (#20) The One-Bowl Limit On Cereal

    From Doreen:

Happened to my son when he was much younger, he was denied a second dish of CEREAL at breakfast when staying at a friend's house that would stay with us just about every weekend! Ppl are weird.

  • (#7) No Chocolate For You

    From Judy:

I would often visit my best primary school friend and they had a shop at the front of their house.

She would often get a chocolate bar from the shop and eat it in front of me. Her parents never told her to get me one, too.

I learned a lot from that home - it wasn’t the way I’d been brought up!

  • (#1) The Refrigerator Was Locked

    From Lisa:

I remember spending a weekend with my Dutch friend in high school. They had a lock on their refrigerator. They never fed me dinner Friday and no snacks, no breakfast on Saturday then we went on a long trip from Rockford MI to Holland MI. They stopped at a rest area only to give me a sandwich with one slice of bread. When I asked for a top piece of bread they called me a [pig]. I was very skinny and they were on the healthy side.

To make a long story short (I know that's too late) I call a sandwich with one slice of bread a V******e still to this day. That was their last name.
