  (#1) A 17-Year-Old Was Shot In The Head While Doing A YouTube Challenge

  One of the most bizarre and dangerous fads that has appeared online as of 2018 is the “No Lackin Challenge," a YouTube challenge in which people film themselves pointing guns at unsuspecting victims to see if they pull a firearm in return. “Lackin” is a Chicago-area colloquialism that describes being caught without a gun.

  In January 2018, 21-year-old Sherman Lackland was hanging out with friends at E's 24 Hour Café, a restaurant in Memphis, Tennessee. Lackland and another friend, an unnamed 17-year-old male, were purportedly playing the "No Lackin Challenge" when Lackland accidentally shot the 17-year-old on the right side of his head.

  The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Lackland was arrested and has been charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, and unlawful possession of a handgun.

  (#2) A Viral Video Shows A Smiling Teen Throwing A Cat Into A Lake

  In February 2018, a video surfaced online, and it quickly went viral. The video begins with a man behind the recording stating, "Welcome to Badass, and this is Felipe the flying cat," apparently filming their own cruel version of the television show Jackass. The smiling teen then picks the cat up by its neck and throws it into a lake. The video was taken over a year before it surfaced online, and the suspect, 18-year-old Garrett Haile from California, was arrested for animal cruelty. Additionally, an unnamed 17 year old who allegedly recorded the incident was arrested on suspicion of participating in a criminal conspiracy.

  (#3) A Video Showing Child Pornography Went Viral On Facebook Messenger

  In January 2018, a video surfaced of what appeared to be child pornography of a young girl with an adult man. A message attached to the video told others to share the video in an attempt to identify the perpetrator and the victim. The video quickly went viral on Facebook Messenger, with thousands of people sharing the video with their family and friends. Police departments across the country were notified about the video, and many released statements telling people not to share the footage, as it's considered distribution of child pornography.

  On February 5, 2018, 44-year-old Germaine Moore turned himself in to the Millbrook, Alabama, police department. Moore, the man in the video, was charged with 11 felonies and multiple counts of criminal sexual conduct. He is accused of sexually assaulting three girls under the age of 13. Moore had been babysitting his nieces from 2011 to 2017, both in Michigan as well as at his home in Alabama. As of April 2018, he is expected to be extradited to Michigan to face additional charges.

  Jerrell Washington, a 42-year-old man from Montgomery, Alabama, was also charged in the crime for possession and distribution of the video.

  (#4) A Man Forced A Teen Girl To Perform Oral Sex On Her Brother

  In December 2017, a disturbing video was uploaded onto a fake Facebook page and promptly shared across social media in Bristol, UK. The video showed two children involved in a sex act. Many children who went to the same school as the kids in the footage knew that the two in the video were brother and sister. As it turns out, the girl in the video met Daniel Norton, a 25-year-old man from Stockport, Greater Manchester, on a dating website. The man took advantage of the teen girl, first asking her to send topless photos of herself to him. He then told her that his father is a cop, and that if she didn't do what he asked, she would be taken from her home. The teen girl was forced to perform sex acts on her own brother under threat from Norton.

  The victims who appeared in the video were subsequently bullied at school and forced to move to a different city. Norton was arrested and charged with forcing a child to engage in sexual activity, possessing indecent photos of a child, and possessing extreme pornography of children. He was sentenced to 12 years in jail.

  (#5) A Group Beat A Disabled Teen On Facebook Live While 16,000 Viewers Watched

  On December 31, 2017, 18-year-old Jordan Hill met up with a classmate at a McDonald's in Streamwood, Illinois. The classmate suffered from schizophrenia as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The two left McDonald's and went to an apartment in West Chicago where Tesfaye Cooper, 18, and sisters Tanishia, 24, and Brittany Covington, 19, were waiting. There, the four began filming a Facebook Live where they abused the disabled teen. The Live video went on for 28 minutes and showed the group of teens kicking and punching the victim, cutting his scalp, and making him drink water out of a toilet. The victim was also bound and gagged. The group continuously taunted the victim, telling him they were going to put him in the trunk and murder him. The victim was detained for approximately six hours before police arrived after receiving a noise complaint.

  The video reached over 16,000 viewers while it was live and then even more once the teens uploaded the footage to YouTube. The four perpetrators were arrested and charged with a hate crime and battery. All four plead not guilty.

  (#6) An Elderly Yakuza Gang Member Was Arrested After Photos Of His Tattoos Went Viral

  Tattoos are a great way to express yourself creatively, but if you choose a life of crime, tattoos may just be your downfall. That was the case for 74-year-old Japanese yakuza boss Shigeharu Shirai. Shirai was accused of murdering a gang member in Japan in 2003 and has been on the run for 15 years.

  In August 2017, a local man from Lopburi, Thailand, came across a shirtless Shirai playing checkers on the street. The local thought Shirai had some fantastic tattoos, which prompted him to photograph the alleged murderer, although the man had no idea Shirai was a wanted fugitive. He posted the photos on his Facebook, and the images soon went viral—they were shared over 10,000 times. The Japanese authorities eventually saw the pictures and recognized the tattoos as intricate art associated with the yakuza gang. Investigators also took note of the missing portion of Shirai's pinkie finger. For yakuza gang members, it's an act of atonement for committing an offense.

  Japanese police contacted the Thai police who began working together to arrest Shirai. On January 10, 2018, the Thai SWAT team arrested Shirai while he was out shopping. While Shirai did admit his identity, he denied having any involvement in the murder. He will likely be extradited to Japan, where he faces criminal charges.

  (#7) An Officer Arrested A Nurse After She Refused To Let Him Take Blood From An Unconscious Patient

  On July 26, 2017, Rigby, Indiana, truck driver William Grey, 43, was in a car accident and suffered extensive injuries, which left him unconscious. While at the hospital, Salt Lake City police detective Jeff Payne was following a request from the police department to get a blood sample from Gray to see if he had any illegal substances in his system at the time of the accident. Since Gray was unconscious, the head nurse at the University of Utah Hospital’s burn unit, Alex Wubbels, calmly explained to Payne that she could not legally allow him to draw blood from the patient.

  Payne was wearing a body camera, and the exchange went viral. After Wubbels refused to let the officer draw blood from the unconscious patient without a warrant, the aggressive officer told Wubbels he would take her to jail for interfering with police matters. Wubbels explained to Payne that she was simply following hospital orders. Payne then told Wubbels she was under arrest as he pulled her arms behind her back and handcuffed her. The officer then placed her in a patrol car as she screamed for help.

  Wubbels was not charged with any crime, and she was released from custody. The department fired Detective Payne from his job of 27 years following the exchange with Wubbels. Payne has filed an appeal against the termination.

  (#8) A Video Of Women Fighting Over A Parking Space Led To Arrest For Attempted Murder

  On April 9, 2017, Shadivia Keauslatyke Phillips, 21, and an unidentified 31-year-old woman got into a fight over a parking space in Detroit, Michigan. The verbal argument soon escalated to a physical fight that ended in Phillips stabbing the 31-year-old woman. Someone witnessing the fight recorded it on their cell phone, and it went viral on social media.

  After the viral footage surfaced, police were able to identify and arrest Phillips. They charged her with assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, and felonious assault. Authorities hospitalized the victim, and, as of April 2018, she is expected to make a full recovery. Officers expressed disappointment toward the viral video's distributor because the person wasn't "recording to give [the] video to police, [they were] recording because they found it... entertaining."

  (#9) A 15-Year-Old Girl Was Sexually Assaulted On Facebook Live

  In March 2017, a group of five to six men or boys sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl in Chicago, Illinois, and filmed it for Facebook Live. At least 40 people were watching the live feed, yet no one contacted police about the assault. A viewer sent the teen's mother screenshots of the video, and she went to police to share the photos and report that her daughter had been missing for two days. Police were able to locate the girl, who was taken to the hospital. As of April 2018, police were yet to identify the men on the Facebook Live video who assaulted the girl.

  After the teen left the hospital, she was bullied by kids in the neighborhood, and others sent her threats on Facebook. People laughed at and made fun of her because of the attack, and they harassed her and her family. The teen's mom told reporters she no longer felt comfortable living in the neighborhood and had no intention of staying there.

  (#10) A Sexual Assault Took Place In Broad Daylight In Mexico City

  On March 8, 2016, which happened to be International Women's Day, journalist Andrea Noel was walking through a trendy and upscale area of Mexico City when a man rushed up behind her, lifted her skirt, and pulled down her underwear. The man then quickly ran away. Noel, who was wearing high heels, did not want to chase the man because she couldn't run fast enough. However, she did notice surveillance cameras where the assault took place, and she was able to acquire the footage. Noel then uploaded the video to Twitter with the caption, "If someone recognizes this imbecile, please identify him. Women should be able to walk safely," with the hashtag, "#happywomensday" 

  The tweet and video immediately went viral—Noel received many supportive messages but also a number of harassing death threats. Many also blamed the assault on Noel's attire, claiming that by wearing a skirt, she was "asking for it." Others suggested that she "deserved rape." Not only did the victim blaming come from citizens, but news outlets in Mexico City also reported on Noel's story and expressed doubt with regard to what happened, despite the video evidence. La Silla Rota, an online Mexican news outlet, even wrote an investigative report titled, "Five doubts about the sexual assault of a journalist in the Countess."

  (#11) A Teen Girl And Her Younger Brother Were Attacked

  In March 2015, a teen girl and her younger brother were walking in Brookside Park, an area of Indianapolis, Indiana. A 14-year-old female classmate of the victims walked up to the girl and punched her in the face. While the fight was taking place, another girl was recording the incident on her phone. During the altercation, the victim repeatedly asked, "What did I do?" and begged the girl to stop hitting her. Meanwhile, the young victim's little brother is heard screaming and crying while the attacker pulls his sister's hair and stomps on her head.

  A nearby witness stops the fight, and the victim begins to walk away, only for someone else to dare the attacker to continue beating the victim. The perpetrator again begins punching the victim in the face. When her younger brother tries to intervene and protect his sister, the perpetrator grabs him by the neck and throws him to the ground. The video was posted online and received over a million views. The suspect who started the fight was arrested.

  (#12) A Woman Died In A Horrific Car Crash, And The Viral Video Was Sent To Her Parents

  On July 17, 2010, Dayna Kempson Schacht of Griffin, Georgia, lost control of her vehicle and ran into a row of trees. The impact killed the mother of two instantly. One of the first responders at the scene made a short video of the crash showing the aftermath as well as Schacht’s corpse. The first responder shared the video with firefighters as well as patrons of a local bar. The video went viral, and in September 2010, it was shared with Schacht’s parents, who were understandably horrified.

  Schacht’s father, Jeff Kempson said, "It was bad enough that we lost our daughter. And now to have to deal with something like this, it's just beyond words." Her mother, Lucretia Kempson added, "When I close my eyes, it's not fair that that video is what I see of my daughter." The firefighter who initially filmed the accident was fired over the incident.
