  • The Night King Is A Greenseer, Just Like Brandon Stark on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#1) The Night King Is A Greenseer, Just Like Brandon Stark

It seems obvious the Night King knew Daenerys would come north, and he was well-prepared to take her dragon. Perhaps, then, he knows what's going to happen in the future. Redditor frowat suggested he knew when Jon and the Night's Watch would be at Hardhome. And, perhaps, as user Elvis_burrito suggested, he has similar abilities to Bran.

Both are greenseers, which would explain their unique mental connection.

  • The Night King Lured Daenerys North To Get A Dragon on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#2) The Night King Lured Daenerys North To Get A Dragon

There's a reason the White Walkers didn't attack Jon Snow once they surrounded him and his band of merry men at the frozen lake north of the Wall, according to Redditer DamisuNight's King.

He knew that putting Jon and company in danger would summon Daenerys and her dragons to the north, and that was his real aim: getting a dragon for himself. We know this because he came prepared with special, dragon-slaying javelins (which are not typical White Walker tools) and had no problem taking down Viserion. He knew he would need the dragon to take down the Wall before he could lead his army south into Westeros.

  • Is The Night King An Ancient Stark? on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#3) Is The Night King An Ancient Stark?

People have been speculating that the Night King is a Stark for a long time, and we've got some compelling evidence. For one, in the books, the Stark family nanny Old Nan tells Bran that the Night's King (his title in the books) was a Stark—named Brandon, in fact.

Even the Stark family slogan, "Winter Is Coming," could be a reference to a Stark Night King's alliance with the Others. Redditor ThouCantTouchThis elaborated on this suggestion, noting the strange mental connection between Bran Stark and the Night King, particularly the fact that both have ties to wargs.

  • Why Jon Snow Is The Only One Who Can Take Down The Night King on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#4) Why Jon Snow Is The Only One Who Can Take Down The Night King

This theory from Redditor frowat requires that we accept a simple fact: the Night King can see the future. As evidence they cite that,

"when Bran sees the NK and his army using ravens, he's at the spot where Drogon and Dany land to rescue the gang; the NK's slow, precise movements even when aiming the ice spear, almost as though they’re rehearsed in advance; the NK knows to attack Hardhome exactly when Jon and the Night’s Watch are there."

So, if that's the case, why did his second ice spear miss Drogon? Because, Jon told Daenerys to take off with Drogon. See, after Jon was betrayed by his brothers, his "script" ended, and the Night King became unable to predict his actions. Jon's influence, therefore, can change the timeline. Jon, therefore, will be the only character in the series able to catch the Night King unawares, and ultimately defeat him.

  • Bran Stark Has Secretly Been The Night King All Along on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#5) Bran Stark Has Secretly Been The Night King All Along

One of the most popular fan theories is that Bran Stark is the Night King. Redditor turm0il26 posited that Bran will decide to go back in time to stop the White Walkers. The Three-Eyed Raven once told Bran that he'd never walk again, but he would fly. This meant he would fly not only as a raven, but also through time.

Bran will travel back in time to tell King Aerys to "burn them all." Everyone in King's Landing? No—the White Walkers. Or the dead bodies, lest they rise as wights. This, of course, backfires when Aerys starts raving like a Mad King who wants to blow up an entire city.

So Bran has to go back even further, to become Brandon the Builder. He will then construct the Wall to keep the White Walkers safely north of Westeros.

Redditor sephelutis speculates that Bran will then go back even farther, to attempt to convince the Children of the Forest not to make a First Man into the Night King. Alternatively, he will warg into that very man to prevent his transformation.

Then, because it's notoriously easy to mess up during time travel and leave your friend holding the door, Bran would end up becoming the Night King. That would explain why only the Night King, not other White Walkers, can see Bran.

  • Is The Night King Just Really Good At Warging? on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#6) Is The Night King Just Really Good At Warging?

Redditor Arya_Granger has a compelling theory that explains the Night King's awesome power. They believe the Night King is warging into thousands of dead corpses simultaneously. They point out that we've seen Bran warg into animals relatively easily, but humans presented more of a difficulty. The dead, however, have no minds at all and would thus be the easiest to control.

Additionally, this could explain how the Night King was able to sense Bran. Wargs can always feel the presence of another warg.

  • The Night King's Sigil Gives Away His Origin on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#7) The Night King's Sigil Gives Away His Origin

Ever since "Hardhome," the eight episode of Season 5, fans have become familiar with the Night King's brooch, as seen above. One Redditor, Mr_Bricksss, has people convinced that they know the significance behind the symbol.

They believe the Night King was actually the first Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, and his brooch is meant to represent the skull of a crow or a raven on top of a cone-topped castle turret (likely from the Nightfort). They even created a handy visual guide to point out the similarities.

  • The Night King And Azor Ahai Are One And The Same on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#8) The Night King And Azor Ahai Are One And The Same

The Game of Thrones universe features tons of prophesies regarding the man or woman who will save the world. This person is called the Azor Ahai, the Last Hero, and Prince (or Princess) That Was Promised. But what if this storied individual is actually the Night King?

Redditor OjWasFramed12 reminds us that we, the viewers, think the Night King is evil, but we can only see one side of the conflict. One prophecy states that Azor Ahai will wake a dragon, as the Night King has already done with Viserion. Remember: the Children of the Forest created the White Walkers to battle humans, who were destroying them. The Prince That Was Promised will defeat evil—and it's entirely possible that the evil is not the night, but humans themselves.

  • Nobody Can Really Destroy The Night King, Only Replace Him on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#9) Nobody Can Really Destroy The Night King, Only Replace Him

What will Westeros do if the Night King is immortal? The reincarnation of Azor Ahai might be able to remove the dragonglass from the Night King's chest, but in order to control the Night King's wights, Azor Ahai would have to become the new Night King.

Or, at least, that's what Redditor AnghkoR_ suggested. Thus, the Night Kingslayer would have to stab himself with the dragonglass, sacrificing himself to save everybody from the onslaught of the undead. He would live beyond the Wall in permanent exile, never able to see his loved ones again.

  • The Night King Is The Last Hero on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#10) The Night King Is The Last Hero

Azor Ahai isn't the only savior figure in A Song of Ice and Fire. The Northerners have their own legends of the man who took down the White Walkers, and they called him the Last Hero. The Last Hero was said to have brought about the end of the Long Night by uniting with the Children of the Forest, and winning the Battle for the Dawn.

Now, we haven't officially seen the Last Hero in Game of Thrones yet, but some fans have speculated that he's been hiding in plain sight. Redditor cxtxzxn believes that the Night King is actually the Last Hero. They reason that if all humanity needed to defeat the White Walkers was the Children of the Forest, the Children themselves would have already beaten back their icy enemies.

They think the Night King was a Stark, and he used his warging ability, combined with the Children's magic, to take control of the White Walkers and march them deep into the north. The Night King also built the Wall, to keep the White Walkers contained. After thousands of years, however, his identity has become lost, and that's why he's currently invading Westeros.

  • Rhaegar Targaryen Is Alive, And He Is The Night King on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#11) Rhaegar Targaryen Is Alive, And He Is The Night King

What if Jon Snow's biological father, Prince Rhaegar Targaryen, survived the Battle of the Trident and was actually turned into the Night King? For one, as Reddit user Three_eye_raven_s observed, we've never seen Rhaegar taken out on-screen.

Rhaegar still being alive would certainly account for the weird looks the Night King gives Jon Snow. It would also explain how the Night King could walk through fire—Targaryens are fire-proof, after all. It would certainly make the final conflict of the series all the more poignant if it was between father and son, Rhaegar and Jon.

  • Jon Snow Is Destined To Become The Night King on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#12) Jon Snow Is Destined To Become The Night King

The books frequently suggest that Jon Snow will become some sort of king. Reddit user theDarkLordOfMordor theorizes that Snow will actually become the Night King.

We know the Night King has close ties to the Starks. Of course, Jon is a Stark through his mother, Ned's sister Lyanna. What if Jon himself removes the dragonglass from the Night King's chest? What would happen? Perhaps Jon would warg into the Night King, and become the big bad himself. It would certainly be a poetically dismal end for a man who has dedicated his life to destroying the White Walkers.

  • The Night King Can Only Be Defeated By One Man: Qyburn on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#13) The Night King Can Only Be Defeated By One Man: Qyburn

According to Reddit user Chatelaine_Thecla, Qyburn will be the salvation of Westeros. They believe Qyburn will use his understanding of undead biology and natural scientific aptitude to "hack the Night King's undead.net and bring it all down." Qyburn represents the triumph of science over magic, and after defeating the Night King, he'll usher in a more modern future for Westeros.

  • Cersei Is The Night Queen on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#14) Cersei Is The Night Queen

What if Cersei Lannister is actually the Night King (or Queen, as it were)? The clever queen has managed to outsmart most of her rivals thus far, and Redditor crokuz suggested she's been playing the long game to eliminate her rivals—Dany and Jon—north of the Wall and in King's Landing.

That would explain why she's kept her hair short, like the Night King, and recently has become involved with magic. Also, how many other people do you know with undead bodyguards? Or perhaps, as Reddit user kendras82 suggested, the Night King will march south of the Wall and marry her.

  • Bronn's Final Reward Is To Become The Night King on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#15) Bronn's Final Reward Is To Become The Night King

Two different actors have played the Night King, and Redditor Justwonderin321 noted that one version looked remarkably like the actor who plays Bronn. The mercenary works closely with Jaime Lannister, but what if he's secretly a White Walker? We also know Bronn's been north of the Wall, but we don't know what he did there. It's entiely possible he could have been conspiring with, or leading, the White Walkers.

  • Hodor Is The Night King on Random Insanely Convincing Fan Theories About The Night King On Game Of Thrones

(#16) Hodor Is The Night King

What if the dearly departed Hodor is actually the Night King? This rather far-fetched theory from Redditor narglesconmigo starts like this: Bran wargs into Hodor. Hodor then gets warged into some weird time-loop that ensures he'll still be alive—but his future self, who's become a White Walker, captures his past self.

And Hodor is now coming to get Bran, so he can get to Old Nan (and his memories) through her.
