  (#8) His Public Relationships Often End Poorly 

  In an interview with Rolling Stone in 1995, Carrey's ex-wife, her lawyer, his then-girlfriend, and even Carrey himself speculated about why he can't keep a relationship straight. His ex-wife Melissa Womer recalls telling Carrey that even though he was a star, "[you] must come home and put your feet back on the ground and take your garbage out like everyone else, or I can't be married to you.' And basically, he called my bluff."

  To which Carrey said, "She's lucky to be out of my life. I'm in a different time zone at this point. I was headed there when we were together, so it's OK. Everything is fine. This is the way it's supposed to be."

  (#3) He Got Into A Graffiti War With The Police

  In 2011, Carrey found himself enmeshed in a vandalism situation with the NYPD because he was spray painting the outside of his West Village art studio with something he called "Baba." Baba is a "mischievous deity... [who] exists in negative space."

  The police covered up the first painting, but then Carrey made a second version of the Baba artwork that came with the message: "This graffiti reapply pursuant to... [drawing of Baba]... Ordinance FFC.”

  (#4) He Stuffed His Pockets With Cheese While Filming 'Man on the Moon'

  It's not uncommon for actors to go method for their roles. Carrey himself is known for adapting his characters into his public persona, blurring the line between fact and fiction. 

  While filming 1999's Man on the Moon, Carrey reportedly stuffed his pockets with Limburger cheese. Costar Paul Giamatti recalled:

  He'd constantly be hugging people, and he had it all over his hands and stuff. It was disgusting. He was touching people and making them shake his hands all the time. He smelled horrible.

  (#1) He Posted An Uncomfortable Video For Emma Stone

  In August 2011, Carrey caught some flak for publicly sharing what sounded like a love letter to Emma Stone. In the video he says he wants to marry her and have her "chubby little freckle-faced kids." At the time, Stone was 23. 

  Stone responded that she wasn't sure whether to be "flattered or [to] seek an order of protection." Carrey alleges the video was just a joke, another one of his characters.

  Carrey's always been into art, but before he could discover his passion for comedy, he was creating realistic drawings of his father. Carrey told Rolling Stone:

  I did pencil sketches and stuff like that. My parents would come into the room and ask, 'What are you drawing?' It would be my dad looking at his watch with a gun in his hand. 'It's a portrait of you,' I said. 'It's called Waiting to Die.'

  (#2) He's Made Controversial Statements About Vaccines

  After dating Jenny McCarthy, Carrey started posting tweets that claimed, "They say mercury in fish is dangerous but forcing all of our children to be injected with mercury in thimerosol [sic] is no risk. Make sense?" And, "I am not anti-vaccine. I am anti-thimerosal, anti-mercury. They have taken some of the mercury-laden thimerosal out of vaccines. NOT ALL!" 

  Most vaccines don't have mercury in them anymore, and even the ones that do contain a form of mercury contain something called ethylmercury, which is a compound that naturally degrades, ensuring that there's no buildup in your body. Ehtylmercury isn't the same thing as methylmercury, which you find in fish and can make you sick if you put too much of it in your body.
