(#17) 1998: Voldemort Dies In The Battle of Hogwarts

In March 1998, Voldemort finally tracks Grindelwald down to Nurmengard prison, where he's unable to make the now old and defeated Grindewald reveal the location of the Elder Wand. Angered, Voldemort kills Grindelwald for his defiance. However, he deduces that Dumbledore had been the final owner of the Elder Wand due to his defeat of Grindelwald and retrieves the wand from Dumbledore's grave at Hogwarts.

On 1st May 1998, Voldemort learns of Harry Potter's hunt for the Horcruxes after the theft of Hufflepuff's goblet from Gringotts. He decides to check on all the remaining Horcruxes, only to learn that they have all been stolen as well. With Nagini by his side, Voldemort leaves for Hogwarts to retrieve Ravenclaw's diadem from the Room of Requirement. Upon his arrival, he learns that Harry has inspired an uprising at the school and driven the Death Eaters out. This prompts Voldemort to declare a battle until Harry is dead. Voldemort also kills Severus Snape when he realizes that Snape was the one to kill Dumbledore and would logically be the master of the Elder Wand. Unbeknownst to Voldemort, Hufflepuff's goblet and Ravenclaw's diadem are both destroyed at Hogwarts around this time.

On 2nd May 1998, Voldemort summoned his Death Eaters back for one hour and gave an ultimatum to Harry's supporters to turn him over or he would join the battle himself. Harry arrives in the Forbidden Forest to sacrifice his life at Voldemort's hands, who casts the killing curse. However, Voldemort only manages to destroy the piece of soul that lived in Harry. Believing himself to be triumphant, Voldemort orders his enemies to acknowledge him as their master until Harry reveals himself to still be alive. In the ensuing chaos, Neville Longbottom kills Nagini, leaving Voldemort mortal once more.

Unknown to Voldemort, Harry is actually the true owner of the Elder Wand as Dumbledore had been disarmed by Draco Malfoy before his death, whom Harry had overpowered earlier. Seeking to kill Harry once and for all, Voldemort casts the killing curse but it backfires on him as the Elder Wand refuses to kill its master. With this, the dark and twisted life of Tom Riddle finally comes to an end.
