As it turns out, massaging your face is a great way to keep it looking luminous, becasue it keeps your circulation going. As Sir John explains, both your face and makeup will thank you. "Your foundation lays better. It lasts longer. All dark circles are, or acne scarring, or any of that kind of stuff, is sluggish circulation," he says.

(#2) Moisturizing Is The Name Of The Game
Perhaps the best makeup tip of them all is the simplest: make sure you keep the skin underneath your makeup looking radiant and moisturized. Sir John recommends keeping your skin prepped with products like L'Oréal's Pure Clay Mask, REN's Glycol Lactic Radiance Renewal Mask, or Caudalie's Beauty Elixir.

(#3) Drink Carrot Juice
"I'm really holistic when it comes to skin care—it really starts on the inside," Sir John explains. "I'm a huge fan of eating healthy to make sure your skin is getting the vitamins and nutrients it needs to look its best. I always tell my clients to drink a carrot juice before a big event because you will see the results literally overnight." Beyonce, at least, follows his advice.

(#4) Easy On The Powder
Though a great powder is a perfect way to set your look, Sir John reveals that you want to keep things light and avoid certain areas.
"I like an invisible or translucent loose powder. I find that pressed powders are too heavy. Also, you never want to use them around the eyes because it ages you. The skin around your eyes is so thin, I wouldn't want to put anything heavy and dry around that area."

(#5) Lipstick Looks Depend On The Occasion
With so many shades of lipstick on the market these days, how's a girl (or guy) to chose? Sir John says it's all about consideration for the look you're trying to get.
"When you want your skin to pop or your tan to come alive, choose an orange-based red. Tomato red will make your skin look healthier. If you want your teeth to look really, really white and your smile to illuminate, go for a blue-based red from raspberry to dark Merlot."

(#6) The Center Of The Face Should Always Stay Matte
According to Sir John, you should always try and keep the center of your face a shine free zone in order to avoid looking like a headlight in your next selfie. Don't get him wrong though, a little shine can go a long way — as long as it's well placed. He explains:
"I love to use luminizing products; L'Oréal's Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer is great around the edge of the face to give it some brilliance and radiance so you look glowy and dewy but in a totally natural way."

(#7) Keep Your Makeup In Place With A Mattifying Moisturizer
There's nothing worse that nailing a perfect look, only to find that it's smudged across your face throughout the day. Never fear, however, for there both products and techniques you can use to avoid just such a disaster. Sir John advises,
"Start with a great cleanse and then use a mattifying moisturizer like Hydra Genius for Oily Skin to keep your foundation anchored all day long. When you go to set your foundation, utilize a translucent powder like Infallible Pro Sweep & Lock Loose Setting Powder. Make sure to use a fluffy brush vs. a sponge. Set by brushing in a powder instead of sponging."

(#8) Resist the Urge To Go Overboard
With all the great products on the market, sometimes the urge can be strong to use a little bit of everything all at once. But as Sir John told Allure, when it comes to makeup, a little really does go a long way, even when it comes to fake eyelashes.
"The skin should be minimal, editorial. And too much lash cheapens a look. I see people do two and three-pair stacked lashes — it’s cute for the club, but don’t send your girl down the red carpet like that.”

(#9) Your Makeup Focus Should Change Based On Your Age
As humans age, the skin and face change as well, so why shouldn't the way we apply our makeup grow? Here's the breakdown Sir John recommends makeup techniques based on various age groups:
"Under 18 - You're a minimalist. Keep it simple by using a cream blush on cheeks and a tinted lip balm. No lipliner! Keep the edges of the lips soft. Finish with just a hint of mascara.
18 to 35 - Focus on your eyes. Go crazy with bold eyeshadows and don't hold back on the mascara. Keep the lips and cheeks subtle.
Over 35 - It's all about the statement lip, a flush on the cheeks and a great complexion." -
(#10) Baking Is Not Such A Hot Idea
Though Kim K. and others in the beauty world were at one point all aboard the baking train, it turns out that not all celebrity makeup artists are fans of the trend. Sir John firmly declares his negative stance on the style:
"I never bake. Ever. It never looks natural on a girl. I'm always starting from the place of being so minimal. Anything I do that's creative is going to be an eye or a lip, but her skin is always going to be natural."

When it comes to beautiful looking skin, there's no cream in the world that can give you a glow quite like a healthy diet and exercise routine. Sir John says, “I jump rope because it’s good for the face.” He also stresses that what you put in your body has a way of shining through, for better or for worse. Sir John takes his own tips to heart, and it shines through in his much-lauded work.

(#12) Leave a Little Room For Lower Lid Liner
Though makeup fans everywhere love their concealer, both for coverage and quick on-the-go touch ups, Sir John advises not going overboard on a good thing. Rather than applying it all the way up to your lower lid, leave enough room for lower, waterproof eyeliner. This will help you avoid a tired look and make your eyes more lively.
