  • Jennifer Lawrence on Random Actors Whose Costumes And Makeup Nearly Killed Them On Set

    (#1) Jennifer Lawrence

    • The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1, X-Men: First Class, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Silver Linings Playbook, American Hustle, Winter’s Bone, House at the End of the Street, The Beaver, Like Crazy, Serena, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2, X-Men: Apocalypse, Joy, The Burning Plain, Garden Party, The Poker House, Company Town, Devil You Know, Not Another High School Show, The Glass Castle, Burial Rites, East of Eden

Jennifer Lawrence signed on to play Mystique in X-Men: First Class before the one-two punch of Hunger Games and Silver Linings Playbook made her one of the most famous people in the world. It took Lawrence seven to eight hours to get into makeup for First Class, and the process involved six women painting her while she stood around naked. And the makeup came with nasty side-effects, too.

“I got a couple of things from the paint,” Lawrence said. “Like weird boils, rashes and blisters. [My doctor] had to pop them.”

For the second film in the second X-Men trilogy, Days of Future Past, the process was amended so Lawrence wore a suit, and was only painted from the next up, but still, it took three hours, and she hated it so much she considered turning the part down. Among other concerns was her distaste standing around for hours breathing hazardous materials that might cause permanent damage.

As she told Entertainment Weekly, “I love working with [X-men director] Bryan [Singer], and I love these movies... It’s just the paint…fumes and toxins. Now I’m almost 25 and I’m like, ‘I can’t even pronounce this and that’s going in my nose? I’m breathing that?’”

If you've seen X-MenApocalypse, you surely noticed Lawrence was hardly ever blue. Because she was so famous for that one she just straight up said no.

  • Buddy Ebsen on Random Actors Whose Costumes And Makeup Nearly Killed Them On Set

    (#2) Buddy Ebsen

    • Breakfast at Tiffany's, Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier, Davy Crockett: The River Pirates, Captain January, Attack, The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band, Broadway Melody of 1936, The Andersonville Trial, The Interns, Mail Order Bride, Broadway Melody of 1938, Stone Fox, Parachute Battalion, Born to Dance, Yellow Jack, Between Heaven and Hell, The Bastard, Red Garters, My Lucky Star, Banjo on My Knee, Night People, Four Girls in White, Working Tra$h, Fire on the Mountain, The Kid from Texas, Rodeo King and the Senorita, Silver City Bonanza, The Horror at 37,000 Feet, Sing Your Worries Away, Pioneers of Primetime, Frontier Rangers

The 1939 film The Wizard of Oz is famous for the deadly problems it caused the cast and crew. Actor Buddy Ebsen, who originally played the Tin Man before being replaced by Jack Haley, was one of its more famous victims. In order to make him appear silvery as the Tin Man, MGM decided to cover him in white face paint coated with aluminum dust.

Nine days into filming, Ebsen went to the hospital for shortness of breath and cramping. He was hospitalized for two weeks, and at one point his lungs even failed. He was replaced by Jack Haley while he was still recovering.

  • Tobey Maguire on Random Actors Whose Costumes And Makeup Nearly Killed Them On Set

    (#3) Tobey Maguire

    • Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Tropic Thunder, The Great Gatsby, Seabiscuit, Empire Records, Pleasantville, Rock of Ages, The Cider House Rules, Wonder Boys, 25th Hour, The Ice Storm, Deconstructing Harry, Brothers, Cats & Dogs, Ride with the Devil, The Wizard, Seeking Justice, Country Strong, This Boy's Life, Labor Day, The Good German, Quiet Type, Healer, Revenge of the Red Baron, Don's Plum, The Details, S.F.W., A Child's Cry for Help, Seduced by Madness, Whatever We Do, Beyond All Boundaries, Joyride, Duke of Groove, In Spite of Love, Pawn Sacrifice, Tales from the Whoop: Hot Rod Brown Class Clown, The Spoils of Babylon, Z for Zachariah

The upside-down Mary Jane/Peter Parker kiss in Spider-Man is one of the most iconic superhero film scenes - but it wasn't as romantic as it looked. As Tobey Maguire hung upside down, his mask forced rain water into his nose, turning the on-screen romantic kiss into more of a CPR situation on set.

  • Kate Winslet on Random Actors Whose Costumes And Makeup Nearly Killed Them On Set

    (#4) Kate Winslet

    • Titanic, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Finding Neverland, Sense and Sensibility, Divergent, The Reader, Flushed Away, Movie 43, Revolutionary Road, Heavenly Creatures, All the King's Men, The Holiday, Little Children, Contagion, The Life of David Gale, Quills, Iris, Hamlet, Romance & Cigarettes, A Kid in King Arthur's Court, Holy Smoke!, Hideous Kinky, Enigma, Labor Day, Carnage, Jude, Christmas Carol: The Movie, Insurgent, Mildred Pierce, Pride, Faeries, The Fox and the Child, A Little Chaos, War Game, Cleanflix

1997's Titanic was the highest-grossing film of all time when it was released. It was, however, less beloved by the cast. Kate Winslet, in particular, almost drowned while filming a scene with Leonardo DiCaprio. As they ran from a wave crashing against a closed gate, her coat got caught and she became stuck underwater and had to struggle her way free.

  • Margaret Hamilton on Random Actors Whose Costumes And Makeup Nearly Killed Them On Set

    (#5) Margaret Hamilton

    • The Wizard of Oz, The Ox-Bow Incident, The Anderson Tapes, 13 Ghosts, Brewster McCloud, State of the Union, Nothing Sacred, The Red Pony, My Little Chickadee, You Only Live Once, The Daydreamer, Four's a Crowd, Journey Back to Oz, The Invisible Woman, Guest in the House, Comin' Round the Mountain, Riding High, George White's Scandals, Broadway Bill, The Farmer Takes a Wife, The Night Strangler, Saratoga, When's Your Birthday?, The Sin of Harold Diddlebock, By Your Leave, Way Down East, I'll Take Romance, Faithful in My Fashion, The Villain Still Pursued Her, Chatterbox, Hat, Coat, and Glove, The Witness Chair, Texas, Brooklyn and Heaven, A Slight Case of Murder, The Affairs of Martha, Stablemates, Mountain Justice, Driftwood, City Without Men

1939's The Wizard of Oz featured Margaret Hamilton as the Wicked Witch. While her iconic, copper-based green makeup - which could only be removed with alcohol - irritated her skin and stained it green, it also played a part in a deadly problem on set. During the scene where the Wicked Witch leaves Munchkinland in a flash of smoke and flames, a trap door was supposed to open, allowing her to safely escape, but it didn't.

Margaret's costume and makeup caught fire. Her face and hands were badly burned and she spent several days in the hospital.

  • Scarlett Johansson on Random Actors Whose Costumes And Makeup Nearly Killed Them On Set

    (#6) Scarlett Johansson

    • The Avengers, Iron Man 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Lost in Translation, The Prestige, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, Ghost World, The Island, Home Alone 3, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Her, He's Just Not That Into You, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Under the Skin, Chef, Don Jon, Match Point, The Man Who Wasn't There, Eight Legged Freaks, The Spirit, Lucy, The Horse Whisperer, The Black Dahlia, We Bought a Zoo, The Other Boleyn Girl, North, The Perfect Score, Just Cause, Scoop, Hitchcock, Girl with a Pearl Earring, The Nanny Diaries, In Good Company, A Good Woman, An American Rhapsody, A Love Song for Bobby Long, Buck, Fall, My Brother the Pig, If Lucy Fell, Manny & Lo, These Vagabond Shoes

Marvel films many of their movies in Albuquerque, NM, but filming in the middle of the desert definitely has its pitfalls for the cast. During the filming of The Avengers, Scarlett Johansson struggled against the heat in her Black Widow costume. While filming a fight scene on a makeshift roof, she even hallucinate from heatstroke.

  • Johnny Depp on Random Actors Whose Costumes And Makeup Nearly Killed Them On Set

    (#7) Johnny Depp

    • A Nightmare on Elm Street, Platoon, Edward Scissorhands, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Alice in Wonderland, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Sleepy Hollow, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Ed Wood, 21 Jump Street, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Hugo, Corpse Bride, Donnie Brasco, Rango, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Dark Shadows, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Blow, Finding Neverland, Chocolat, Secret Window, Public Enemies, The Lone Ranger, Jack and Jill, Dead Man, Cry-Baby, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Benny & Joon, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare, The Tourist, The Ninth Gate, Into the Woods, Don Juan DeMarco, Before Night Falls, Arizona Dream, The Libertine, The Rum Diary, The Man Who Cried, Transcendence, The Brave, The Astronaut's Wife, Mortdecai, Private Resort, Tusk, Nick of Time, When You're Strange, Deep Sea 3D, Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Slow Burn, Shantaram, Yoga Hosers, L.A. Without a Map, Happily Ever After, Cannes Man, The Source, Stuff, Sonic the Hedgehog, Wild Roses, Tender Roses, London Fields, The Devil, the Sinner, and His Journey, Untitled Keith Richards Documentary, Divine Rapture

In the 1990 Tim Burton film Edward Scissorhands, Johnny Depp played a shy not-quite-human with a penchant for topiaries and tight-fitting leather clothes. The latter proved too much for Depp during one scene, however.

According to co-star Diane Wiest, "One night [Johnny] had to do a running sequence, running away from the house, I think at Christmas. And he passed out. He fell down and we thought, 'well is he acting? What's he doing?' and he'd passed out. Never complained, but he'd passed out from the heat of the suit. It was really remarkable, but somehow very revealing about him and that quality comes through his acting."

Clearly Mr. Depp is more than willing to suffer for his art.

  • Boris Karloff on Random Actors Whose Costumes And Makeup Nearly Killed Them On Set

    (#8) Boris Karloff

Boris Karloff, born William Henry Pratt, became an overnight sensation playing the monster in 1931's Frankenstein. The actual filming, however, was less than glamorous. While wearing lead-based paint on his skin and a heavy costume, he worked 19-hour days. According to his daughter, the already thin actor lost 25 pounds while filming.

Funnyman Jim Carrey has said that the special contact lenses he had to wear on the set of Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas made him feel like he had knives in his eyes. The costume itself was so vastly uncomfortable and made Carrey feel so claustrophobic that a Navy SEAL had to coach him through dealing with the panic attacks wearing it gave him.

  • The Costumes On Star Trek: The Next Generation Gave The Cast Back Problems on Random Actors Whose Costumes And Makeup Nearly Killed Them On Set

(#10) The Costumes On Star Trek: The Next Generation Gave The Cast Back Problems

When Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted in 1985, creator Gene Roddenberry decided that Spandex was the material of the future. Unfortunately, spandex stretches only from side to side or top to bottom, depending on how it's cut. The costumes dug into the cast's shoulders, and considering they had to wear them for 12-15 hours a day, it was not long until many of the cast members developed painful back problems.

Fortunately, the uniforms were upgraded by Bob Blackman during Season 3.

While playing Gimli in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, John Rhys-Davies had such a severe allergic reaction to his facial prosthetics that he was in constant pain. It was so bad that he could only work one out of every three days.

When asked if he would reprise his role in The Hobbit, he said "no," because he didn't think his skin was physically capable of taking that kind of abuse again.

  • Kuno Becker on Random Actors Whose Costumes And Makeup Nearly Killed Them On Set

    • Goal!, ESL: English as a Second Language, Goal II: Living the Dream, Imagining Argentina, From Prada to Nada, From Mexico with Love, Goal III: Taking on the World, Spoken Word, Lucía, Lucía, Nomad, Richness of Internal Space, Once Upon a Wedding, The Snitch Cartel, Sex and Breakfast, Panic 5 Bravo, Las paredes hablan, Cinco De Mayo: The Battle

Apparently, the makeup contained harsh chemicals which nearly blinded him. On social media, he told his fans the accident was due to the makeup department failing to know what was in the products they used.

  • Martha Mansfield on Random Actors Whose Costumes And Makeup Nearly Killed Them On Set

    (#13) Martha Mansfield

    • Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Broadway Bill, The Warrens of Virginia, The Wonderful Chance, Max Wants a Divorce, Civilian Clothes

Non-fatal costume and makeup mishaps are, sadly, not as uncommon as we like to think. But actors can usually recover from costume injuries - it's extremely rare that a costume actually kills someone. But it happened to actress Martha Mansfield.

While filming the 1924 Civil War drama The Warrens of Virginia, Mansfield died in a terrible accident. A member of the cast flicked a match, which caused her elaborate costume to catch fire. While the other actors managed to put the fire out, they were not fast enough. Mansfield was so badly burned due to her highly flammable costume that she died in the hospital the following day.

  • Tyler Mane Went Temporarily Blind While Filming 'X-Men' on Random Actors Whose Costumes And Makeup Nearly Killed Them On Set

(#14) Tyler Mane Went Temporarily Blind While Filming 'X-Men'

Former wrestler Tyler Mane was no stranger to acting like a tough guy and really committing to a role. That's why he was the perfect choice for Sabretooth in the very first X-Men film. Mane definitely looked the part, and he did everything in his power to make his mutant character seem as realistic as possible. In fact, Mane wore specially colored contacts for his part even though other actors objected. Rebecca Rojin played Mystique but only wore her colored lenses one hour per day. Halle Berry refused to wear them at all for Storm's costume.

Mane's dedication eventually gave him severe eye problems. When he took out the large black contacts, he couldn't see for the rest of the day. Mane was still positive about the experience, though. He noted:

The prep work meant getting ready for the prosthetics and having the costume designed, In the movie I have got prosthetics on my forehead, which comes right down to my eyes... Then I have prosthetics on my hands, and also had to wear wigs. It took me four hours to get into that costume, but it was worth it because the people who are in the know about the X-Men, especially those who know about Sabretooth, said that the costume was very accurate.

  • Michelle Pfeiffer Cut Her Own Face On The Set Of 'Batman Returns' on Random Actors Whose Costumes And Makeup Nearly Killed Them On Set

(#15) Michelle Pfeiffer Cut Her Own Face On The Set Of 'Batman Returns'

Michelle Pfeiffer really brings Catwoman to life in Batman Returns. The role was hard to prepare for, though. Pfeiffer even had to practice learning how to use Catwoman's signature bullwhip for a month before trying her skills on camera. Her trainer sustained multiple injuries but so did the actress. During one practice session, Pfeiffer sliced open a part of her face with the 10-foot weapon. She covered the injury with makeup so Batman produces wouldn't make her use a stunt double. The actress shared:

Whips have a beauty, an elegance and a sexuality to them. There is almost a graceful, dance-like quality to them, which at any moment could turn violent. I got a little wild the first day with my whipmaster. I slashed his face and drew blood. I even hurt myself a few times. But he was an amazing teacher; there is an actual beauty to the way he taught me.
