  • (#3) Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi

    • Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, James Earl Jones, Alec Guinness, Billy Dee Williams, Frank Oz, Ian McDiarmid, Warwick Davis, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, David Prowse, Anthony Daniels, Denis Lawson, Sebastian Shaw, Kenneth Colley, Jeremy Bulloch, Michael Pennington, Mike Quinn, Larry Ward

Characters And Film: Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Yoda; Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi

Deleted Scene: Yoda explains to Luke that Obi-Wan wanted to tell him Darth Vader is his father, but Yoda wouldn't let him.

How It Changes The Main Character (And His Friends): This small moment changes the relationship between Luke, Yoda, and Obi-Wan. For Luke, he now realizes that Obi-Wan didn't want to keep things from him, but Yoda did. For Obi-Wan, it proves he disagreed with Yoda and wanted to reveal the truth to young Luke.

The whole thing switches around a number of relationships and personalities while also teasing tension between Yoda and Obi-Wan.

  • (#13) Superman II

    • Gene Hackman, Christopher Reeve, Terence Stamp, Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Ned Beatty, Valerie Perrine, Susannah York, Jackie Cooper, E. G. Marshall, Sarah Douglas, Jack O'Halloran, Clifton James, Marc McClure

Character And Film: Superman, Superman II

Deleted Scene: Some sort of North Pole police show up to detain Lex Luthor and the evil Kryptonians after their ordeal in the Fortress of Solitude.

How It Changes The Main Character: In the theatrically released Superman II, Superman depowers Zod, Ursa, and Non, and then throws them into an icy pit. They are never seen again, leading the audience to assume they perish. This scene reveals Superman just puts them out of commission, then turns them over to the authorities. Superman isn't a slayer, and his wholesome reputation remains spotless.

Perhaps more intriguing, however, is what else the scene establishes. First, that the North Pole has a police force, and second, that Superman's secret base isn't that big of a secret.

  • (#4) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part I

    • Emma Watson, Daniel Radcliffe, Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, John Hurt, Alan Rickman, Michael Gambon, Brendan Gleeson, Bonnie Wright, Jason Isaacs, Bill Nighy, Julie Walters, Rupert Grint, Michelle Fairley, Timothy Spall, Rhys Ifans, Tom Felton, Robbie Coltrane, Imelda Staunton, Evanna Lynch, Natalia Tena, Miranda Richardson, Toby Jones, Warwick Davis, Domhnall Gleeson, Jamie Campbell Bower, David Thewlis, Clémence Poésy, Richard Griffiths, Fiona Shaw, Katie Leung, 피터 뮬란, Matthew Lewis, Helen McCrory, Freddie Stroma, Frances de la Tour, Rade Šerbedžija, Devon Murray, Toby Regbo, Mark Williams, Jessie Cave, Geraldine Somerville, Oliver Phelps, Nick Moran, David O'Hara, Michael Byrne, Guy Henry, Sophie Thompson, Simon McBurney, James Phelps, David Ryall, Dave Legeno, Ralph Ineson, Afshan Azad, Georgina Leonidas, George Harris, Adrian Rawlins, Scarlett Byrne, Carolyn Pickles, Joshua Herdman, Harry Melling, Graham Duff, Ned Dennehy, Rose Keegan, Greg Bennett, Kate Fleetwood, Emil Hostina, Samuel Roukin, Steffan Rhodri, Arben Bajraktaraj, Andy Linden, Angelica Mandy, Richard Strange, Daniel Hill, Martin Ballantyne, Sam Creed, William Melling, Daisy Haggard, Suzie Toase, Rod Hunt, Isabella Laughland, Ian Kelly, Anna Shaffer, Hazel Douglas, Adrian Annis, Charlotte Atkinson, Eva Alexander, George Potts, Elliot Francis, Penelope McGhie, Paul Davies, Matyelok Gibbs, Simon Grover, Jon Campling, Ruby Evans, Amber Evans, Louis Cordice, Anthony John Crocker, Ashley McGuire, Ifeoma Oboko, Daniel Tuite, Paul Khanna, Granville Saxton, Bob Yves Van Hellenberg Hubar, Peter G. Characters And Film: Harry Potter, Petunia and Dudley Dursley; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1

Deleted Scene: Before the Dursleys leave Privet Drive, Harry has a moment with each of the family members.

How It Changes The Main Character (And His Family): Arguably, these scenes are more important for Petunia and Dudley than Harry. For book readers, the final moments with the Dursleys will be familiar. But moviegoers merely got a glimpse of Harry's tormentors before they left the series forever.

In the two scenes, we hear Petunia speak fondly of her sister for the first time, proving that she was affected by the loss. We then have Vernon prove he hasn't changed at all before Dudley says a good-bye to Harry and gives him the closest thing to a compliment Harry has ever received from a Dursley. These moments provide Harry with a little closure, but they also prove that two out of the three Dursleys are at least a little human.

Character And Film: David Levinson, Independence Day

Deleted Scene: David explains he can decode the alien's language and use tech from Roswell to make his Macintosh computer capable of uploading a virus to the mothership.

How It Changes The Main Character: This scene shows how much of a genius David is, but more importantly, it fills a major plot hole that viewers have wondered about since the film's 1996 release: How the heck can the humans give a virus to an alien operating system?

Character And Film: James T. Kirk, Star Trek (2009)

Deleted Scene: James's older brother, George, tells James and their uncle he's leaving home. James is told to wash the car (which belonged to his father), but he first connects with George, who can't stand living with their uncle. George leaves and James finds the keys to the car as he's cleaning it.

How It Changes The Main Character: Aside from explaining just who James drives past in the red Corvette (his brother in the original cut), it provides the inspiration for pretty much the entirety of Captain Kirk's arc in the film.

Character And Film: Seth Davis, Boiler Room

Deleted Scene: As he departs his office, Seth passes by Harry, the investor that he's screwed over, who is shown to be armed.

How It Changes The Main Character: The original ending of the film involved Seth's bilked investor coming to the office and raining fire down on everyone. This would have ended things on a much darker note and shown just how nefarious Seth's actions were.

About This Tool

We all know that movies and TV shows often cut scenes. Because time is limited, especially in a film, the effect is to be engaging from beginning to end, which can easily dampen the audience’s enthusiasm if the plot is too complicated or uninteresting or irrelevant to the subject matter.

The random generator tool collates 15 entries and records 15 deleted scenes from movies or TV shows. The removal of some of these plots, although not very important, but some will directly determine the direction of the film or TV series. Independence Day, Aliens, The Lord of The Rings, Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows, and so on. Did you find the secret plots?
