Bicycling may not seem like a dangerous activity, but try doing it at top speed in the middle of busy Manhattan traffic. This is the life of a New York City bike courier, as portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Premium Rush.

For much of the movie, streets were closed to all automobile traffic save the stunt drivers, who knew how not to mow over any of the cyclists. However, during one scene, a diplomat decided to drive through the coned-off set, cutting off Gordon-Levitt's pathway. The actor veered left to avoid the diplomat, crashed into a taxi, and went through the cab's back window. He wound up with 31 stitches for his trouble, but not before he had the director catch some footage of his profuse bleeding.

The second scene on this list involving an uber-dangerous wingsuit flight in a terrible movie, this one took place in an urban setting. Stuntmen BASE jumped off the 110-story Willis Tower in Chicago and had to navigate between skyscrapers, or else go the way of a bug on the highway.

Was it as frightening as the prospect of watching the movie itself? Only the experts know for sure.

  • (#7) GoldenEye

    • Pierce Brosnan, Famke Janssen, Judi Dench, Sean Bean, Minnie Driver, Alan Cumming, Izabella Scorupco, Robbie Coltrane, Samantha Bond, Tchéky Karyo, Joe Don Baker, Michael Kitchen, Desmond Llewelyn, Michael G. Mitchell, Wayne Michaels, Paul Bannon, Peter Majer, Vladimir Milanovich, Olivier Lajous, Juliet Forester, Terrance Denville

Pierce Brosnan's turn as 007 started with a bang - the opening sequence of GoldenEye features Bond bungee jumping off the Contra Dam, a 720-foot-tall structure in Switzerland. The stunt ends with Bond using a grappling gun to anchor himself to the ground below.

Stuntman Wayne Michaels performed the jump, and experienced such high g-force that he briefly lost consciousness. Michaels came to in time to bust out the grappling gun and complete the take.

  • (#9) Ben-Hur

    • Charlton Heston, Jack Hawkins, Hugh Griffith, Stephen Boyd, Sam Jaffe, Finlay Currie, André Morell, Claude Heater, Haya Harareet, Terence Longdon, Martha Scott, Frank Thring, Cathy O'Donnell, George Relph

The granddaddy of all swords-and-sandals films, Ben-Hur features a thrilling chariot race that was done with all practical effects. While the lead actors actually drove their own chariots for much of the scene, there was one especially dangerous bit that required the expertise of stuntman Joe Canutt.

Canutt's stunt in Ben-Hur involved flipping a speeding chariot over a stationary one, which landed Canutt on the ground and in the path of the horses. A reflexive grab onto the crossbar of the chariot saved him from being trampled, although he was dragged for several feet, resulting in a laceration to his chin.

  • (#16) Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior

    • Tatchakorn Yeerum, Mum Jokmok, Pumwaree Yodkamol, Chattapong Pantana-Angkul, Dan Chupong, Suchao Pongwilai, Chumphorn Thepphithak, Rungrawee Barijindakul, Wannakit Sirioput, Nudhapol Asavabhakhin, Woravit Tanochitsirikul, Udom Chouncheun, Chalongsak Sirimahasan, Boonsri Yindee, Arirat Ratanakaitkosol, Pornpimol Chookanthong, Cheathavuth Watcharakhun

Ong-Bak is one long showcase of the gravity- and death-defying muay Thai expertise of Tony Jaa, in which he risks bodily injury to himself and everyone else on set in every frame. The showstopper here is a scene in which Jaa douses his legs in oil, lights them on fire, and delivers a spin-kick to his opponent's neck. This is real oil and real fire, folks, and in one take in which he used too much oil, Jaa burnt off his eyebrows and singed his nose. All in the name of art.

  • (#15) Bullitt

    • Robert Duvall, Steve McQueen, Jacqueline Bissett, Suzanne Somers, Robert Vaughn, Norman Fell, Joanna Cassidy, Vic Tayback, Georg Stanford Brown, Larry D. Bullitt was one of the first movies to film a car chase sequence at actual car chase speeds. Before then, most films recorded the chase at slow speeds and then sped it up in the editing room.

Not only that, but the famous Mustang/Charger chase took place on the curvy, treacherous streets of San Francisco, with the vehicles reaching speeds of 124 mph.
