  • Katsuya Jonouchi on Random Anime Heroes Were Guilty Of Awful Things

    (#15) Katsuya Jonouchi

    • Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie: Pyramid of Light, Yu-Gi-Oh!

For an anime focusing so heavily on the power of friendship, Katsuya Jonouchi, known as Joey Wheeler in the Yu-Gi-Oh! dub, fails to be a very good friend quite a lot. In fact, when he first starts talking to Yugi Muto, it's because he's tormenting him. He insults him, then takes his possessions and throws them in the school fountain.

Jonouchi's behavior is somewhat understandable in that his home life is a mess; his father beats him, his mother has basically abandoned him, and his little sister is going blind. The behavior also stops completely when he and Yugi become friends. But because their past is never addressed, it's hard to take their friendship seriously.

  • Katsuki Bakugo Horribly Mistreats His Friends In 'My Hero Academia' on Random Anime Heroes Were Guilty Of Awful Things

(#4) Katsuki Bakugo Horribly Mistreats His Friends In 'My Hero Academia'

Katsuki Bakugo may attend a high school for training would-be heroes, but his behavior often falls short of what you might all heroic. Bakugo torments his childhood friend Izuku for years, publicly insulting, screaming at, and even fighting poor Izuku. Motivated by directionless rage, Katsuki constantly misinterprets Izuku genuine care for his well-being as a form of belittlement.

If Katsuki actually wants to be a professional hero, a person worth looking up to, he needs to go about refining more than just his powers.

  • Yugo on Random Anime Heroes Were Guilty Of Awful Things

    (#8) Yugo

    • Battle Angel

When the title character in Battle Angel Alita first runs into Yugo, both she and the audience get the sense of his heart - his earnestness and courage - as he attempts to protect Alita while facing insurmountable odds. She takes an immediate shine to Yugo, unrepentantly crushing on him and even working to help him reach his goal of 10 million chips, which he almost delusionally believes will buy his way out of Scrapyard, up into the rarefied air of Zalem.

His profound desire to reach Zalem is the crux of Yugo's problem and the motivation for his least savory actions. For one thing, he takes advantage of Alita's naivete, accepting her assistance while ignoring her feelings, blinded by his quest. For another thing, before meeting Alita, he racked up credits by aggressively fighting and paralyzing unsuspecting cyborgs, stealing their spinal columns, and selling them to the highest bidder.

  • L on Random Anime Heroes Were Guilty Of Awful Things

    (#11) L

    • Death Note, Death Note, Death Note: The Last Name, L: Change the World

Great detective or not, L's ethics remain questionable, to say the least, and some of what he does is straight-up immoral. To test whether or not Light Yagami and Misa will save their own lives and reveal themselves as Kira, L tricks them into believing Light's father, Soichiro, is about to shoot him in the head. His methods include more than just psychological torment - he locks Light in a cell with his hands behind his back for weeks on end, and keeps Misa straight-jacketed and tied to a cart.

No matter what the ultimate outcome, ignoring human rights is a serious problem, even in the moral gray area that is the world of this show.

  • Handa Seishuu Punches An Old Guy In The Face In 'Barakamon' on Random Anime Heroes Were Guilty Of Awful Things

(#13) Handa Seishuu Punches An Old Guy In The Face In 'Barakamon'

Barakamon opens with Handa Seishuu punching an old man in the face. Unless the old man happens to be a martial arts master training you to fight, you probably will have a hard time defending that act. Handa gets infuriated by the old man's critique of his calligraphy, a skill he cannot take even the lightest of criticisms for - even though this man is a calligraphy expert who is supposed to appraise Handa's work.

After spending the whole series reflecting on his past mistakes, Handa ultimately apologizes for the whole punching thing. Since the old man ends up okay, all's well that ends well, but it is a terrible way to make a first impression.

  • Himura Kenshin on Random Anime Heroes Were Guilty Of Awful Things

    (#16) Himura Kenshin

    • Rurouni Kenshin

The whole premise of Rurouni Kenshin involves a hero guilty of terrible, unforgivable things, who wishes to make up for them. Himura Kenshin used to be known as Hitokiri Battōsai, a talented hitman who reached legendary status for his slaying prowess.

At the time, Kenshin truly believed his actions were justified - he thought taking lives was the right way to help the weak and downtrodden. But when he realized that bloodshed only begets more bloodshed, Kenshin became a guilt-stricken wandering swordsman whose goal is to atone for his previous deeds by helping those in need. As a form of repentance, he carries an inverted katana nearly incapable of causing serious harm.

About This Tool

What do you make of heroism? Heroism is different in everyone’s heart. For example, Romain Rolland once said, there is only one kind of heroism, is to see the truth of life, still love life. Volchek once said, a hero is a man who, at a critical moment, does what is necessary for the good of human society. Voltaire, on the other hand, says that heroism is about sacrificing yourself for faith and truth.

The random tool then generated 16 entries, ruthlessly exposing 16 heroic characters for doing things that were contrary to their identities. Shinji Ikari, Guts, Lelouch Lamperouge, Itachi Uchiha, etc.. Can you remember the mistakes they made?
