  Anyone who descends into the Abyss and then tries to return risks incurring its curse. The curse can cause severe illness or death, and it can even cause its victim to lose human form. Mitty, a little girl who is forced to submit to an experiment that plunges her into the Abyss' depths via an elevator and then brings her back up again, suffers the latter. Her body melts into an unrecognizable puddle, forming a monster covered in pink fur. Not only is Mitty unable to communicate, she's also nearly immortal. 

  At first, that immortality is a source of excruciating pain, because the experimenters who transformed her body repeatedly destroy it to try and find her limit. When Nanachi, a friend whose body has also been dramatically changed by the Abyss, decides to run away with Mitty, the ceaseless pain stops - but she's also unable to care for herself, and will have to live alone for eternity once Nanachi is gone.

  To spare her this terrible fate, Nanachi gets Reg to use a fatal attack on Mitty, putting her to rest once and for all.

  Honestly, most of the characters in Berserk undergo horrifying experiences. But if we had to narrow it down to one character, it would be the series' main protagonist, Guts. From the moment he came out of a corpse's womb, Guts has only known tragedy. At a young age, he suffered from Donovan's abuse and was forced to kill the only father figure in his life. As if that's not tragic enough, the events of the Eclipse bring him more misfortune and pain. 

  Guts witnesses the ultimate betrayal when his best friend, Griffith, offers the Band of the Hawk as sacrifices. He watches all his comrades and friends die gruesome deaths by the hands of bloodthirsty demons. He is then forced to watch Griffith violate his lover, Casca. Although Guts and Casca make it out alive, both of them suffer from fates worse than death. Not only are they branded and constantly chased by evil demons, Casca loses her sanity. Seeing the strong, independent woman he loves be turned into an empty shell of a person is more painful to Guts than a stab to the heart.

  Here's one thing that's worse than death - spending thousands of years trapped in a body that's constantly decaying, and can only be maintained by forcibly taking other people's body parts. That's the fate of Joseph, who began life as a good-natured grave digger. Joseph was so dedicated to helping others that he literally fused his body with an injured stranger who wasn't healing. As a result, he took on the man's curse of immortality, erasing his ability to die but not granting any rejuvenating abilities.

  He spends millennia in excruciating pain, eventually losing touch with his humanity as he's forced to start committing atrocities to keep his body functional and hopefully find a way to end his suffering.

  Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence takes as deep dive into one of the most horrific applications of futuristic technology imaginable. Little girls are kidnapped by the Yakuza, and then their consciousnesses are uploaded to robots called gynoids whose sole purpose is sexual pleasure. These girls are forced to endure not only being separated from their physical bodies, but also repeated trauma. It's no wonder that some of the gynoids turned to a life of crime.

  Rika Furude might look like a little girl, but she may have been alive for anywhere between 100 - 1000 years. During this time, she's been living in an endless time loop. This would be frustrating to the point of madness even if she were able to lead a normal life, but Rika's life is excruciating. Every time she relives the time loop, she's forced to watch her friends lose their minds and go on horrifically violent killing sprees, and her own body is brutally destroyed, often through disembowelment. The details change just enough each time that she can't figure out how to break the loop, leaving her in perpetual misery.

  Noah Kaiba could have passed away in an accident, which would have been a tragic but simple end to his life. Instead of allowing his son to die, Gozaburo Kaiba imprisoned his spirit in a virtual world. At first, this was great - he was able to continue his childhood and spend quality time with his father. But as time wore on, being trapped in a virtual world became increasingly horrifying. Gozaburo was too preoccupied with raising (and abusing) his adoptive children and his company to pay attention to Noah. What's more, he was unable to mature past childhood. Slowly, living in the virtual world turned into an existential nightmare. Isolation drove him insane, and he sought revenge on Mokuba and Seto before finally accepting his own demise, and being allowed to pass on.
