  • Ellen Pompeo on Random Famous People Recount The Moment They Became Vegan

    (#8) Ellen Pompeo

    • 49

Ellen Pompeo has played famed surgeon Dr. Meredith Grey on the ABC medical drama Grey's Anatomy since 2005. In 2018, it was her own doctor who inspired the actress to adopt a vegan diet in order to help prevent breast cancer. During a routine health check, Dr. Kristi Funk told Pompeo about her book Breasts: The Owner's Manual. The read inspired the actress to become vegan and to also turn her husband and three children onto a plant-based diet.

The dietary change turned out to be an easier transition than she originally expected. Pompeo explains:

It’s super fun. I don’t think it’s tricky at all - it’s actually easier because meat you have to cook it before it goes bad. Grains and lentils and rice and beans, everything’s in the pantry already. You just have to get vegetables, but vegetables stay good for a week - and I think we all feel better.

  • Ellie Goulding on Random Famous People Recount The Moment They Became Vegan

    (#13) Ellie Goulding

    • 32

Ellie Goulding lives an extremely healthy lifestyle. The singer-songwriter runs half-marathons, rarely drinks alcohol, has smoothies for breakfast, and has been a vegetarian since she was a teenager. She vows to never eat meat again and is trying to adopt a completely vegan lifestyle. The British pop star removed meat from her diet for good once she figured out where meat actually comes from. She said:

In being vegetarian, I realized I could be an athlete and not need meat for the protein. There’s actually more protein in greens than meat. Once I fully understood where meat came from... I found that concept quite hard to live with. If you don’t need meat to survive, I don’t see why you have to have it. Also it makes you feel tired, it makes you feel lethargic, and your body finds it hard to process so much meat all the time.

  • Portia de Rossi on Random Famous People Recount The Moment They Became Vegan

    (#15) Portia de Rossi

    • 46

Portia de Rossi always considered herself an animal lover. However, she did not place all animals on the same level. The actress and her wife Ellen DeGeneres moved to a farm in California, which was home to several cows and calves.

After the couple adopted a horse, de Rossi noticed how the cows interacted with it:

The cows formed a single-file line, and one by one they touched noses with the new horse as a greeting. The calves wouldn't approach on their own, so one of the cows nudged them forward. Each of the babies touched the horse's nose, then jumped around and played like little children.

The interaction between the animals was an emotional one for de Rossi:

I started crying and thought, I can't possibly keep eating these animals. Before that moment, I wouldn't have fathomed cows doing something like that. I was forced to confront the fact that I had chosen to remain ignorant of their nature because it was just easier that way.

Over the course of the next year, the Arrested Development star went completely vegan. She said she no longer craves cheese or meat and feels happier:

Before that morning on the farm, I ranked an animal's value based on how "human" it was. Now I don't judge other beings that way - every animal has its own intelligence and sensitivities. They're all lovely, worthwhile, and deserving of our respect.

  • Dax Shepard on Random Famous People Recount The Moment They Became Vegan

    (#2) Dax Shepard

    • 44

Dax Shepard got to work with long-time screen actor Beau Bridges in the 2012 Action Comedy Hit and Run. Bridges was 70 years old at the time, and Shepard was impressed with his physical spryness. He asked Bridges the secret to his success, and it turned out that the elimination of meat and dairy made all the difference:

When I saw his age was 70, I almost crapped myself. I would go, "Jesus, Beau, you’re not supposed to be able to punch somebody out in a scene at 70. My grandpa couldn’t have done that. What’s your secret?" And he goes, "I’ve been a vegan for 12 years." I was like, damn, I need to think about this. And then I saw Forks Over Knives, that documentary, and I was like, I’m in. I’ve been a vegan since January.

In addition to his vegan diet, Shepard also quit smoking and drinking. The changes in his lifestyle and diet have made him "tremendously excited about life."

  • Daryl Hannah on Random Famous People Recount The Moment They Became Vegan

    (#16) Daryl Hannah

    • 58

When she was 11 years old, Daryl Hannah made friends with a calf that was on a truck outside of a restaurant in Wisconsin. After bonding with the animal, she asked the trucker the calf's name. He responded, "Veal, tomorrow morning at 7 o'clock."

The moment had a major impact on the Sense8 actress. "That was it: I could no longer disassociate the creature from what was on my plate," she said.

Hannah has become an advocate for the vegan and holistic lifestyle. She vlogs regularly in hopes that she can serve as an inspirational person for others to live mindfully and help the environment. She says:

The planet seems to have an immune system. So many things in nature help bolster it so it can recover. Our species is definitely a problem, but we can be incredibly imaginative and inventive. I've come across some of the most amazing people, who are creating better ways for us to be productive in life and not just consumers. We need a serious change in our priorities, no doubt, but as people get informed, they do make wiser choices and insist on change.

    • 26

Miley Cyrus is an avid animal rights activist. She decided to go vegan when she was 22 years old after her dog was mauled by a coyote. The incident made the pop star give up all animal products.

Since then, Cyrus has not only embraced a vegan diet, but she also lives a totally animal-free lifestyle, which includes her wardrobe. The "Wrecking Ball" singer explained:

Choosing to live as a sustainable vegan activist means wearing more vintage (less waste; loving pieces for longer), playing with the newest eco-materials and technology, and making custom vegan pieces with some of my favorite designers.
