  The Dark Tournament arc of YuYu Hakusho is crucial to the emotional development of Yusuke Urameshi. For alll his sardonic retorts, Yusuke finds himself speechless once he sees Toguro come back from the dead to reveal his true strength. Toguro faked his death during Yusuke's last mission, so he could collect the riches from a bet he placed against himself. He gives Yusuke an ultimatum: participate in the Dark Tournament, or see all his loved ones die.

  In the anime, Toguro intimidates Yusuke by destroying an unfinished building with only 60% of his power. Throughout the tournament, Yusuke struggles to reach a power level high enough to equal Toguro's, but even after a ton of intense training, he struggles to take down the villain (who's still holding back his real power). Yusuke only manages to defeat a fully powered up Togouro after he sees his enemy kill his best friend, Kazuma Kuwabara,

  Sasuke Uchiha is considered the best ninja student in Naruto, but his fateful encounter with Orochimaru in the Forest of Death forever changed his life. Orochimaru is in disguise — he takes the face of a dead ninja he recently killed to mask his own — but that didn't stop him from using his trademark snake summon to intimidate Sasuke.

  Realizing he's outmatched, Sasuke finds himself locked into the same terrified pose Naruto exhibits when he was attacked by the Demon Brothers. Naruto does appear to save Sasuke and offer encouragement, but he's quickly incapacitated by Orochimaru. Luckily, Naruto's arrival gives Sasuke a second wind he desperately needed, and he unleashes his Dragon Fire Technique on Orochimaru to partially burns off his disguise. In the end, Orochimaru doesn't kill Sasuke, but brands him with the Cursed Seal of Heaven, which leads the protagonist down the path of evil.

  • Crocodile

  The Italianate mob boss of Baroque Works, Crocodile, holds a special spot in One Piece history. He effortlessly defeats the rubber pirate Monkey D. Luffy not once, but twice during the Alabasta arc. What gives Crocodile the upper hand in his fight with Luffy is his Devil Fruit powers: he can turn his body into sand, allowing him to avoid taking physical damage. 

  Even without his powers, Crocodile would still be a formidable foe. His strategic mind and large poisonous hook are enough to make quick work of anyone who gets in his way. If not for pure luck, Luffy would have died during any of his three encounters with Crocodile. Even in their final bout, Luffy only comes out on top because of good luck. If the blood from Luffy's cut up fist didn't act as a suitable substitute for water, there's no way he could have exploited Crocodile's aversion to H20 to achieve victory.

  (#14) Faust VIII

  In a world of hyperactive, loud-mouthed anime protagonists, Yoh Asakura from Shaman King is a wonderful outlier. Yoh chillaxes his way to victory, and keeps his cool during fights that would make most cut and run. However, during Yoh's bout with Faust VIII and his departed partner, Eliza Faust, the lazy medium finds himself in a surprising state of desperation and rage.

  The shaman doctor Faust overpowers Yoh with his ability to manipulate the dead. Faust sends hordes of skeleton soldiers after Yoh, while experimenting on Yoh's best friend Manta Oyamada (Mortimer in the English dub). It takes all of Yoh's spiritual energy to free himself from the skeleton ambush and deliver a significant blow to Faust's undead puppet Eliza, but in the end, he can't overcome Faust's immense power. The loss serves to invalidate Yoh's philosophy of "whatever happens, happens," and almost destroys his relationship with Manta, as he blames himself for putting the boy in danger.

  (#13) Inosuke Almost Gets Squeezed To Death In 'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba'

  Inosuke is a character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba who isn't afraid of anything. He'll gladly challenge anyone who crosses his path, no matter how strong they are. But when he's face-to-face with the Father Spider Demon on Natagumo Mountain, he gravely underestimates the demon's ridiculous physical strength. Although Inosuke manages to get in a few hits, he is quickly overwhelmed by the demon who is barely fazed. And just when it seems Inosuke is getting squeezed to death, Giyu Tomioka comes to the rescue. This fight left Inosuke, someone who's usually loud and full of energy, depressed and quiet for a few days after.

  (#16) Team Velshtein Demolishes Team Satomi In 'IGPX'

  Mechs aren't just for battling, they're also for racing. The Toonami anime series Immortal Grand Prix stars Team Satomi, a rag-tag squad of robotic racers who are obliterated by Team Velshtein, the season one favorite. 

  The actual race is over pretty quickly, but the ugly aftermath is displayed in all its horror at the beginning of the episode "Come Together." Team Satomi never stood a chance racing against the elite Team Velshtein and their destructive bots. As humiliating as their defeat is, it only makes the heroes work harder to achieve victory.
