Thanos Smashes Sam Wilson's Head In His Hands

Thanos Smashes Sam Wilson's Head In His Hands

    [ranking: 1]
In case you were wondering, the sound a head makes when it is squished between two massive hands is "SPLORT." At least, that's how the gruesome death is depicted in Thanos #10 when the Mad Titan kills Falcon-turned-Captain America, Sam Wilson. This issue actually shows Thanos as a potentially heroic version of himself, but that's not Thanos.
Shortly after rejecting the vision, he takes his frustration out on poor Sam Wilson.

    Thanos Dissects His Own Mother

    Thanos Dissects His Own Mother

    [ranking: 2]
Thanos was separated from his mother, Sui-San, as an infant after she sensed the evil inside him and attempted to kill him. They did not reunite until Thanos was a full-grown adult, and as we learn in his 2013 run, Thanos Rising, their reunion didn't go well for Sui-San. Thanos dissects his mother (who was alive at the beginning of the process) in an attempt to discover an explanation for his abominable nature.

Thanos's Lackey Beats Spider-Man To Death

Thanos's Lackey Beats Spider-Man To Death

    [ranking: 3]
Infinity Gauntlet put Earth's Mightiest Heroes through hell, especially Spidey, who was brutally murdered by one of Thanos's henchmen. When the Avengers take on the Mad Titan, Terraxia assists her boss by bashing Spider-Man's skull repeatedly until the young hero dies. Spidey isn't the only one to bite the dust in the fight, but his death may be the worst.

    Thanos Punches Through His Father

    Thanos Punches Through His Father

    [ranking: 4]
Thanos's father, the Mentor, is an Eternal. Thanos comics that started in 2016 features all kinds of depravity. One such instance is when he murders his father. Thanos is dying from a disease, so he seeks out his estranged father in the hopes of finding a cure. Knowing his son is a monster, however, the Mentor has no desire to help Thanos.
After some horrifying coercion, the Mentor tries to seek a cure but fails. In return, Thanos punches clean through his father, leaving him to die on the floor.

Thanos Turns Nebula Into A 'Living Sculpture'

Thanos Turns Nebula Into A 'Living Sculpture'

    [ranking: 5]
The Infinity Gauntlet sees Thanos wreak havoc on pretty much everyone in the Marvel universe. He inflicts the most pain on his self-proclaimed granddaughter, Nebula. When the space pirate makes this claim of relation to Thanos, the Mad Titan repays her by transforming her into "a hideous living sculpture of pain and living death."
He laughs at her suffering before offering his progeny as a gift to the living embodiment of Death, with whom he's obsessed.

Thanos Turns Deadpool Into A Puddle

Thanos Turns Deadpool Into A Puddle

    [ranking: 6]
A big part of Deadpool's whole shtick is the grisly humor he has concerning the creative ways his enemies tear him to shreds. Fortunately, he is able to survive most of these beatings due to his healing abilities. Not even Deadpool can survive what the Mad Titan does to him, however.
In Deadpool Vs. Thanos, the latter utterly crushes the former. Literally. He leaves a pool of Deadpool on the floor; the only three-dimensional parts of Deadpool remaining are his ribs, which inexplicably protrude from his completely flattened body. It's one of Deadpool's more gruesome injuries, which says a lot.

Thanos Makes Hulk His Leashed Dog

Thanos Makes Hulk His Leashed Dog

    [ranking: 7]
The Thanos comic that began in 2016 goes to some pretty wild places, including a distant future in which Thanos is king of the universe after defeating the Avengers. Most of those Avengers are dead, but not Bruce Banner. He gets the dubious honor or being turned into the Mad Titan's madder hound.
Thanos keeps Hulk in a pit of bones, when he's not on-leash. Among the bones are those of Steve Rogers, the former Captain America who was fed to the Hulk Hound.

Thanos Puts Cyclops In A Block And Suffocates Him To Death

Thanos Puts Cyclops In A Block And Suffocates Him To Death

    [ranking: 8]
As half the people in the universe were killed during the Infinity Gauntlet arc, it should come as no surprise that some of them were heroes. In a fight where Thor is turned to glass, Wolverine has his bones and adamantium removed, and Spider-Man is beaten to death with a rock, Cyclops also meets a colorfully ruthless end. Thanos manifests a "clear block of force" around Cyclops's head, cutting off oxygen and suffocating the X-Man to death.

Thanos Kills Gamora After Raising Her

Thanos Kills Gamora After Raising Her

    [ranking: 9]
It's already messed up Thanos took a baby Gamora and raised her to be his personal assassin; murdering said adopted daughter is just overkill. Yet that's precisely what the Mad Titan does in Infinity Watch. When her love Adam Warlock sets out to stop Thanos from acquiring the Soul Gems, Gamora accompanies him, ultimately facing off against her adoptive father. He slaps her down and later erases her from existence after completing the Infinity Gauntlet.

Thanos's Mother Tried To Kill Him As An Infant

Thanos's Mother Tried To Kill Him As An Infant

    [ranking: 10]
Thanos's mother, the Eternal Sui-San, saw "death in its eyes" when she first held her newborn son. She wasn't wrong. Unfortunately, she was too prescient for her own good; no one else saw the evil lurking in the baby born with "Deviant Syndrome," and Sui-San was institutionalized. Her urgent need to kill her son is messed up enough; the fact she really should have been allowed to is even more disturbing.

Thanos Kills Half The Universe With A Literal Snap Of His Finger

Thanos Kills Half The Universe With A Literal Snap Of His Finger

    [ranking: 11]
The Infinitely Gauntlet is one of the most devastating weapons in the Marvel universe When all the Infinity Stones (or Soul Gems, originally) are collected and placed in the Gauntlet, the wielder becomes omniscient, omnipotent, and essentially omnipresent.
Thanos succeeds in this ultimate goal in Infinity Gauntlet, showing off his newfound power by snapping his fingers and instantly killing half the living beings in the universe. For those unclear, this is why his quest for Infinity Stones is such a big deal in the MCU.

Thanos Kills War Machine And She-Hulk

Thanos Kills War Machine And She-Hulk

    [ranking: 12]
Thanos kills a lot of people, so not every murder earns a spot among his most disturbing moments. But since he got a twofer with War Machine and She-Hulk in Civil War II, this double murder ekes into the running. During a big brawl between Thanos and some Avengers, War Machine inadvertently hits She-Hulk with his missiles.
While she's down, Thanos takes advantage, blasting her with his cosmic hands. He then moves on to War Machine himself, punching right through Rhodey's armor and stomach, brutally killing him. She-Hulk dies from her injuries later, after suffering through a coma.

Drax Punches Through Thanos's Chest And Rips Out His Heart

Drax Punches Through Thanos's Chest And Rips Out His Heart

    [ranking: 13]
The 2006 cosmic Marvel comic event Annihilation is aptly named, as the whole run is littered with brutally serious deaths. Drax's murder of Thanos, for example, is particularly gruesome. While Thanos is no stranger to fists tearing through people's torsos, he's not usually on the receiving end of such savagery. The Mad Titan gets what's finally coming to him when Drak the Destroyer not only punches through Thanos' chest, but rips out his beating heart.

    Thanos Kills Himself

    Thanos Kills Himself

    [ranking: 14]
In the three-part comic book event Infinity, the universe is faced with an even greater threat than Thanos: Annihilus. The Mad Titan has to team up with Adam Warlock to stop the big bad. Things go awry though, and Adam Warlock accidentally traps himself and Thanos in purgatory.
Thanos quickly comes to understand his only way out is death. So what does someone known as the Mad Titan do? He uses cosmic blasts from his hands to blow up his own head, committing suicide in a decidedly dramatic fashion.

If you think the Mad Titan of the MCU looks menacing, you haven't been subjected to much of Thanos in Marvel comics. Some unspeakable atrocities have been committed against Thanos himself, but the worst things Thanos has ever done makes those incidents look like tickle fights. Given what we know about Avengers: Infinity War so far, it seems unlikely Thanos will do anything quite as viscerally horrifying as he does in the comics (though he may come close with Vision).

Marvel's Ultimate Universe has depicted all kinds of unsettling things, but the most disturbing Thanos moments in Marvel comics don't even depend on that alternate, gruesome reality (and that's not even considering his evil henchmen, the Black Order).
