Night divers encounter someone a hundred feet deep

    [ranking: 1]
"Two buddies of mine and I were on a night dive in the Puget Sound hunting for prawns. It was about 1 a.m. and we are about 100 feet deep, in pitch black. We like to do this thing on night dives where we'd get in a circle, turn off our lights, then stir up the water and watch the bio-luminescence float around us like floating stars in a black watery space. Only this time after we turn off our lights, the water glows just enough to reveal a fourth person sitting in our circle. We were at a dive resort so it wasn't so odd to see another diver, only it was 1 a.m. and we'd seen no one else prepping a dive at the dock. He was also alone which was odd considering the dangerous conditions of a night dive in those waters, plus he had no fins or gloves.
I don't know how he swam so well without fins or didn't get hypothermia without boots or gloves. We wore drysuits because it was so cold but this guy was in a wetsuit with exposed skin and we thought we saw a giant gash in one of the legs. The three of us all notice him and we're too scared to move. It is absolutely terrifying when someone just shows up 100 feet underwater at night. I can hear my buddies panting into their regulators. The guy just simply smiled at us and waved before swimming away."

"Some friends and I took my truck up in the mountains during the winter time and we towed each other on a tube across the snow. We'd drop the tailgate in my old long-bed Ford and a few guys would sit in the back with one of those bazillion candlelight spotlights. When I was driving it'd be fun to make really wide turns in the dark so the person on the tube didn't have the luxury of headlights or taillights to somewhat illuminate their trail. The person in the bed of the truck with the spotlight would be funny and shine the light clear off to the side so it was pitch black if you were on the tube. One particular winter night, a snowstorm was rolling in so we headed up to the usual spot. It was really DARK that night. I was driving while a friend sat on the tube.
The guy with the spotlight shined the light clear to the side of the truck and as I checked my mirror, I made eye contact with a guy dressed in jeans, a red plaid shirt, and an orange baseball cap. As we made eye contact, I lost all control of my body for probably only five seconds, but it felt like an eternity. I stopped the truck and turned it around and asked the guys if they saw him. They all said no, so I flipped the truck around and turned on the high beams and they shined the spotlight all over. I got out and looked for footprints in the fresh snow and saw nothing.
That night we went back home and I told my dad about the weird experience and didn't think anything of it. A week later on the news, the police reported finding a body in the area close to where we were and asked for any tips. My dad convinced me to call the police and tell them we were up in the area and saw that guy. I called and an investigator came over to the house, I told him I saw that man seven days ago. As soon as I said that, the investigator asked me, "Are you are sure about the date?" When I said I was positive, he showed me a picture of the body they found wearing the same red plaid shirt and orange ball cap. Turns out it was a man who suffered from some mental handicaps and committed suicide on the mountain, one month BEFORE I saw him."

"My cousin Charlie needed someone to babysit his house in San Luis Obispo so I volunteered. I was staying at his place by myself getting lost in a Lord of The Rings marathon until around 2:30 a.m. The marathon ended and I proceed to make some green tea. That's when I hear a distant scream. I knew it was a human scream but for some reason I just refused to believe it. The thing about the houses in that area is that you have a lot of room between you and your neighbors but you can still hear them if someone is loud. I thought maybe the neighbor screamed because they were watching a scary film. That's when I heard something similar to multiple firecrackers going off.
Something didn??t seem right, so I grabbed the nearest blunt object and headed upstairs. My cousin Charlie has a 360 degree second deck so I went out and turned on the outside lights. I listened but I could only hear the wind. What I later found out from my Cousin Charlie is that a man had a big argument with his wife and shot her as she ran from the house. Because I was the only one who had left the outside lights on, she had ran towards me but died from her wounds just short of Charlie's house. That part still gives me chills."

"In college, I spent one month house sitting a large hunting estate in the middle of nowhere in Idaho. The nearest town was 22 miles away. The house belonged to my girlfriend at the time??s dad who asked to fill in for the caretaker. One night, I woke up in the middle of the night to the sound of someone knocking loud and hard on the front door and the dogs were going nuts. There was no way I was going to answer it. I just grabbed a gun and kept quiet upstairs. There were several neighbors that were a few miles away, so I thought someone just simply drove up the wrong driveway. Next morning at dawn, I open the front door to let the dogs out and see a white Chevy Nova sitting in the driveway. There was only one set of tire tracks coming in to the house. I called my girlfriend's dad and asked him if he knew anyone with that make/ model car and told him about what had happened the night before.
He didn't know anyone and he called the police. They show up ask me a few questions and walk around the property for about an hour or so. The car was locked, so the police had it towed. A few days later, my girlfriend's dad called me up to say the guy who owned that car was missing and to call the police if anything weird happened again. I have no idea who the guy was at all. I found out later that the owner of the car was found dead by suicide 30 miles away. The suicide happened several months after that incident at the house, and he was found a couple of days after he had killed himself. I still wonder what would have happened if I had answered the door."

"I was out in the Dark Canyon Wilderness of Utah after two weeks of driving and backpacking around the country alone. The plan was a seven-day trip and after a few days of setbacks I was on my last night. By this time I was already a little scared of the dark but that's just what happens when you are your only company for three weeks. Anyway, on the sixth day, about halfway through my hike, I ran out of water. I made camp and went upstream in search of water. After a little hiking I found a little spring with deliciously cold refreshing water. I drank some before realizing I didn't bring my water bottles so I hiked the half mile or so back to the camp to get them. On my trip back to fill my water bottles, I kept feeling really vulnerable and uncomfortable. Every little rustle in the bushes set me off. I could hear birds calling in the distance that set me off. I kept looking for something following me.
I can only describe my emotion as pure terror. It got to the point where I picked up a branch for a weapon. I kept telling myself that it was just paranoia but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched. I finally got to the water and filled up my bottle, constantly looking over my shoulder. The feeling of unease was still with me when I headed back to my camp. There I came upon a fresh mountain lion print placed directly between my two footprints. It's one thing to think that your fears are unfounded paranoia, it's much worse to know they are true."

??My father used to solo fly freelance charter jobs. On one job he was flying a dead man to his funeral destination. On the way there my dad ran into some bad weather and turbulence. He started hearing a strange, human sound. The dead guy behind him was gasping and moaning and making sounds like a forceful 'HUURRRRRR....HUURRRR...!' Before you start thinking the dead guy wasn't actually dead, it turns out that the rough turbulence was forcing air out of the cadaver??s lungs and producing the creepy sound.??

"I spent an entire year at my cousin's farm in Colombia. It's very deep into the mountains and 90 percent of his land is covered in forest. One day I was picking some tomatoes when suddenly the whole mountain goes silent. Not a single animal made a sound. All of a sudden every critter imaginable starts coming out of every hole and every crack and starts running uphill. Massive tarantulas, huge cockroaches, beetles, mice, rats, etc. Anything that crawled on land was rushing away. Then the dogs started barking and whimpering. My cousin yelled, "La ronda, La ronda!" which means "The round, the round!" He tells me to get inside the house.
Then he gets a bag out with some sort of poison and starts pouring it outside the house. I hear what sounds like running water coming uphill from the trees. I looked outside and saw what was probably millions of ants crawling up the mountain and eating every living thing in their path. It was absolutely terrifying. I couldn't see the ground because there were so many ants. Luckily, the poison worked and the ants crawled away from the house. My cousin was happy because the ants killed whatever pests were around."

"When I was 16 years old, I had to do a wilderness program in the  high desert area before I went to rehab. One night when we were camping by this river, we heard a whole pack of wolves come through the campsite probably about 50 feet away from where we were sleeping. We didn??t have tents, only tarps that we set up as A-frames each night with surrounding trees. Thankfully, the wolves didn??t disturb us. The next day we were backpacking and found about a dozen coyotes mutilated, cut open and displayed on fences. It was pretty strange and frightening. I was ready to go back to civilization ASAP and start rehab."

"It was late at night and I was hiking in a group of about five people. We didn't have enough flashlights to go around, so we gave one to the person in front and I took one since I was in the back. I felt like I was being watched so I flashed the light around and saw a pair of green eyes attached to a body slink back off the trail a little bit. Our light wasn't powerful enough to get a super good bead on it, but every 30 seconds or so thereafter, I would turn around and flash the light up the trail and see it.
It followed us for probably a half hour, until we were 10 minutes from the cars. The people I was hiking with didn't notice, and mountain lions don't often jump large groups of adults. I didn't say a word while it was following us since I didn't want to run the risk of a panic so I freaked out by myself in silence."

Lone dam operator has a night visitor

    [ranking: 10]
??I worked as a security guard at a hydroelectric dam in Virginia in a fairly isolated location.  About a month after I was hired, one of the guys at the dam told me that most security guards out there quit after a few days because they got so creeped out being alone at the dam at night, and he was glad I was sticking it out. In truth, it could be creepy. Sometimes at night, when I was patrolling the basement level of the dam itself, I??d think about the fact that I was fifty feet below the water-line on the low side with the only human being about a mile and a half away. Sometimes I??d hear weird noises in the woods, or catch a flash of a shadow while I was inside the dam. It takes a lot to scare me, though, and I knew I was either hearing critters in the woods or my mind was playing tricks on me. One night, however, something happened that scared the living hell out of me. It was a little after 11 p.m., and I was sitting in the guard house reading a book. Suddenly, I heard a tap at the door. What was creepy about the guardhouse at night was that when you had the lamp inside turned on, people could look through the windows at you, but the glare made it difficult for you to see outside.
When I heard the tap at the door, I thought it was a bug hitting the glass; it was so faint, and I knew I had the place to myself. Then the tap came again, more insistent this time. I grabbed my flashlight and opened the door. There was no one there. Then I let the door slip from my hand and shut behind me. To my left ?? previously concealed by the door as I had opened it ?? was a huge man, at least 400 pounds, wearing a gray sweatshirt and gray sweatpants.

The sweatshirt was smeared with fresh blood. My heart started hammering. My blood ran cold. I was so scared I couldn??t speak. As it turns out, he was a local fisherman who had been fishing off the bridge and he was wondering why the power company hadn??t started back-pumping into the lake yet, because they usually started a little before 11 and that was what always drew in the big striped bass. He was smeared with blood because he??d already caught and gutted a couple and wiped his hands on his shirt. He felt really bad when he realized that he had approached me basically in the same way that a murderer in a horror movie would have. I am thankful to this day that I was unarmed security, because if I??d had a gun, I would have either shot him or accidentally shot myself while trying to shoot him.??

"I was camping in upstate New York a week after two prisoners escaped from a prison. This was a high notoriety escape and was national news. My girlfriend and I had hiked and camped for two days before this. We were very comfortable, had met a lot of awesome people, but everyone was on alert of the escapees. We had settled in a remote area upstate New York with no one around that night. I was sound asleep that night. At 5:30 a.m. I had started to wake but stayed in my tent, trying to go back to sleep for an hour or two. Not long after I was awake did I hear rustling in the woods around our campsite. At first it was a few rustles, which caught my attention, but not enough to be alarmed. Suddenly, the rustles are right outside our tent and I am on edge. Before I could even tap my girlfriend, all hell breaks loose. My tent is slashed open with a knife while I am watching.
My heart almost went through my throat. Before I knew what was happening I was being pile driven into the ground by men with guns. Thankfully I had noticed in the seconds that the men had POLICE armor on. I started screaming out my name, my address, my Social Security number. My girlfriend was even jumped on and forcefully subdued while she was sleeping. Once everyone's adrenaline calmed down, we showed our ID's and proved we were just camping. It was one of the scariest moments of my life. Turns out we were not far from where the prisoners were just spotted, and the police hadn't come across anyone in days had thought for sure they had found the escapees."

"Navy ships are bound to have its creepy stories. For example, on a supply ship when I was 'cranking' (working 90 days in the galley), I was talking to one of the cooks. He said that a few years before, the ship had picked up dead fisherman they found floating and put them inside the freezer, the freezer WITH dinner still inside. He said it was creepy as hell going in and out to grab platters with corpses sitting nearby. The strangest part is that below decks we have multiple MASSIVE freezers and there should have been plenty of space. The cook never knew why they put them inside the tiny freezer on next to people food."

"I live on a compound by myself. It's my tiny home, work shop, and a couple of other buildings for food/equipment storage and a guest room. During one bad snowstorm I decided to hunker in for the long haul. I spent almost two weeks without leaving. Three days in, I get woken up to a knock at the door. I get up to answer it and halfway there, I realize the only way this guy could knock on my door is if he broke the outside gate lock. So I grab my shotgun and ask him through the door who he is and what he wants.
Guy says nothing and keeps banging. I go out the back door and sneak around front and I see a man who is on the ground, covered in blood, and shouting for help. Turns out he was driving, crashed and dragged himself five miles down the road until he came to my place. By then he realized that I forgot to lock the bottom part of the gate and dragged himself in. Luckily he survived."

"In high school, I was at a summer camp that separated the boys from the girls. We would normally sleep in separate cabins, however this being a nice night, our counselors decided to let us camp outside. We decided to make a bee line for the girl??s campsite, except when we got there, we were dumbfounded at what to do. We decided that throwing miscellaneous items into the fire, creating subsequent explosions would be a good ice breaker.
Unfortunately, due to our brilliance, we were quickly brought back to our camp and separated from the girls again. Not being discouraged, we decided to try again. As we began to leave for the girl??s campsite again, we heard an extremely loud bang, as if from a high caliber rifle. The sound was followed by another bang, followed by silence. We all became paralyzed and unsure what to do. Was it from the girls' site? We were too afraid to find out. We could see a flashlight in the distance waving around the area. I remember lying quietly, barely able to sleep, joking with fellow campers who would get shot first if that bang was indeed from a gun.
The next morning we woke up, alive and very confused as to what had happened. I actually only found out what had happened when I got home from camp. A man had shot his ex at a house right by our campsite. What I remember the most is that a neighbor said she didn't call the police right away, because she figured the sound was from some stupid kids blowing up things at the campsite."

"I used to live in rural Panama in a community with no electricity. The whole town is inside by sundown, around 7 p.m., and asleep by 9 p.m. One night, I'm outside at around 11 p.m. photographing stars and I have to turn my headlamp off while the camera is taking the pictures - 30 to 150 seconds of almost complete darkness for each shot. When I finish a photo, I'll turn my headlamp back on and look at my camera to adjust settings and take another shot. One time when I turned my head lamp on, I saw a pair of eyes just about fifteen feet away in the bushes staring at me. I've got friends who have worked setting camera traps throughout the country and I've seen picture evidence that there are still several types of big cats alive and well in the area.
I lean down to pick up some rocks, look back up, and the eyes are gone. My house is about 100 feet away. I do my best to turn my handful of rocks and dinky tripod into weapons and run as manly-like as I can back to my house. I never went back out to take pictures at night."

"One time we were camping and talking with one of the locals we came across that lived in the Appalachian Mountains. He eventually talks us into going down a back gravel road to show us some more of the land. He drives us down this back gravel road and eventually turns off onto a small hill and goes back through a path into a small corner in the woods. There is a group of people in old vans with doors open, propane tanks, and other random non-camping "equipment."He cuts the engine and a big dude with a scraggly beard starts slowly walking up to us.
At this point we immediately knew they were cooking meth and we gave each other the "We need to get the hell out of here look." The bearded man starts talking to our driver and arguing about money a bit and then ends the conversation. Our driver starts up the truck, turns around, and we leave. I felt like I was in The Hills Have Eyes or Deliverance. It was completely creepy especially since I thought we were going to die.??

One day, they're out flying around since it??s a nice day and suddenly the entire sky goes completely red and there are no clouds. They had no radio so his dad continues flying for hours. They didn??t say a word but both father and son were  thinking that the Cold War had just ended in thermonuclear holocaust since Alaska was a target close to Russia and this was the height of the Cold War. Finally, they start to run out of fuel so they have to land. His dad eases the plane down, finds the landing strip and goes in for an emergency landing. They don't know what's going on.
They make it down perfectly, no hiccups, bumps, or anything. The airport is in an uproar and a crew guy comes up to help them out. "What's going on?" his dad asked. The guy tells them,"You have no idea just how lucky you are. A volcano just went off, and you've been flying through the debris." So there was no thermonuclear warfare and they were stupidly lucky that the plane didn't stall out in the middle of nowhere Alaska with a volcano spewing nearby.??

Basically I used to get paid to take long walks every day recording the ecology and anything else notable. One day, I was surveying an area where the military trains. I had been walking for about four hours and hadn't seen another person in that time. The trail I was following led me into a small woodland and I was just walking along. Suddenly there were about 10 or 12 guys surrounding around me. All armed to the teeth of course. All of them laughing like hell as I nearly soiled myself. They were all special forces types training on a camouflage /stalking course. They had been following me for about an hour. Apparently I nearly stepped on one of them about 10 minutes before, as he was hiding right by the path. We all ended up sitting around in the wood having a chat."

"I was working on a trail crew in the Trinity Alps of Northern California. We had 13 people on the crew and a few support staff. At this point we'd been in the woods for about two and a half months. We had all seen and heard bears, mountain lions, pretty much anything you can think of that would make terrifying noises. After dinner one evening, most of us are sitting around the fire doing whatever and all of a sudden there's a LOUD agonized screaming sound. It was unlike anything any of us had heard. If I had to describe it, I'd call it a mountain lion's shriek combined with the horror of a banshee. Everyone was understandably freaked the hell out. It sounded reasonably close so a few of us, myself included, decided to investigate. About three miles from our base camp there was a creature tied to a tree, absolutely losing it's mind. It was a llama! At this point, it's 10 p.m. or so, and 25 miles from the nearest trailhead. We tried to calm it down without much success and went back to camp. The next morning, the llama was gone. It looked like it had broken its restraint and ran off.
We kept hearing the horrible llama noises from time to time for a few weeks. Towards the end of the season, a group of hunters passed us on the trail and after chatting for a bit, we found out they tied the llama there because it decided to be stubborn and refused to walk anymore. Apparently it laid down on the trail and WOULD not move. So they left it and decided to come back for it. We figured at that point, the llama was probably dead. We hadn't heard any hellacious llama screams for a few months and didn't really think about it. However, at the end of the season when we all finally got back in the crew van and were driving out, that damn llama jumped across the road about 30 yards in front of us. I still think about the demon llama from time to time.

"My wife, daughter and I joined our troop for a Cub Scout Halloween event at a camp in Colorado. It's a large hilly area tucked away in the canyons and we stayed in cabins that were nowhere near the rest of the group. We get ready for bed and as I'm starting to fall asleep I realize how eerily quiet it is. It is completely still outside. No wind, no rustling of trees. I eventually fall asleep. I am then awoken very suddenly by a scream inside the room. I sit up and ask my wife if she is ok. She responds yes and checks on our daughter. She is fine. It is now dead quiet again. No noise. The scream is gone. So in a panic I start walking around the room in the dark.
Maybe it came from outside. So I peek out the window and out the front door. No movement; nothing. It's pitch black. I can't see anything.  I stand there frozen for a minute and finally work myself up the courage to go outside. I grab my phone, turn on the screen for light and see a Halloween update alert from the Simpsons Mobile game. So what I heard was Homer Simpson screaming from my phone  Needless to say, I uninstalled that game and haven't played it since. It took a good two hours for my wife and I to fall back asleep.
