    (#1) Dealing With Incoherent People

No matter what your profession is, you are bound to deal with an unhappy customer from time to time. It is just a part of life. But these unhappy customers are a lot harder to deal with when they are eight drinks deep.
  • Friends Expecting Free Drinks on Random Worst Things About Being A Bartend

    (#2) Friends Expecting Free Drinks

Of course it's okay to slip them a beer here and there. But for them to expect you to do it on a regular basis is pretty unfair. Your boss wasn't born yesterday. And, even if he or she was oblivious to your generous ways, you're there to make money!
  • People Reaching Over The Bar To Get Something on Random Worst Things About Being A Bartend

(#3) People Reaching Over The Bar To Get Something

This is not a free for all! I don't come into your office and help myself to your paperclips, do I?!
  • People Snapping At You/Waving Money on Random Worst Things About Being A Bartend

(#4) People Snapping At You/Waving Money

I know how to do my job. I see you standing there, and I know you have been patiently waiting for a few minutes, but snapping at me like I am an animal or waving money at me like you are the only one in here willing to pay for your drinks isn't going to entice me to get to you any sooner.
  • People Trying To Stay After Last Call on Random Worst Things About Being A Bartend

(#5) People Trying To Stay After Last Call

While it is great that your customers are having SO much fun enjoying the BEST NIGHT EVER, all good things must come to an end. And you have been working for 12 straight hours and really need them to leave so you can close the bar and go to bed.
  • People Taking Forever To Order on Random Worst Things About Being A Bartend

(#6) People Taking Forever To Order

Again, if you are the only customer in the bar, then by all means, take however long you need. But one of the worst things about bartending on a busy night is when you finally ask the person who has been flagging you down for four minutes what they want and they respond with "ummmmm......" as they rub their chin and take inventory of the bar.
  • Trying To Reason With Sloppy People on Random Worst Things About Being A Bartend

(#7) Trying To Reason With Sloppy People

One of the worst things about bartending is that you, obviously, have to deal with a lot of intoxicated people. This job would be a lot easier if people knew their limits.
  • People Questioning Your Knowledge On Drinks on Random Worst Things About Being A Bartend

(#8) People Questioning Your Knowledge On Drinks

One of the worst things about being a bartender is how condescending people seem to get around you. I am sure you know how to make a Manhattan, however, I am almost positive I have made many more than you.
  • Not Having Payment Ready on Random Worst Things About Being A Bartend

    (#9) Not Having Payment Ready

This is usually the same person who flags you down for five minutes then doesn't have their order ready once you get to them.
  • People Not Tipping Well on Random Worst Things About Being A Bartend

    (#10) People Not Tipping Well

If you think you can afford a night out on the town with your buddies, please make sure that includes adequate tipping. I didn't sacrifice my social life and personal leisure to slave away all night taking care of your party of six for $3.00.
  • Splitting Tips on Random Worst Things About Being A Bartend

    (#11) Splitting Tips

Why should you have to split the night's tips 50/50 with the other bartender when you are the one who did the majority of the work?
  • People Sending Drinks Back on Random Worst Things About Being A Bartend

    (#12) People Sending Drinks Back

If your drink is absolutely disgusting, of course you should send it back. But that doesn't make it any less annoying for the bartender who is trying to tend to 30 thirsty adults and doesn't necessarily have time for your sophisticated pallet.
  • People Thinking You Are Skipping Them on Random Worst Things About Being A Bartend

(#13) People Thinking You Are Skipping Them

Experienced bartenders typically know what they are doing; they have the system down pat. If you think they are skipping you on purpose, you are probably wrong. That, or you did something to make them mad.
  • People Forgetting To Close Out Their Tabs on Random Worst Things About Being A Bartend

(#14) People Forgetting To Close Out Their Tabs

Most bars have a policy that if you forget your debit card behind, they have the right to automatically close it for you and apply a 20% tip to the bartender. But while forgetting your debit card is more inconvenient for the customer, the bartender is the one who has to stop what they are doing during their shift the next day when you come in, hungover, asking if you left your card there.
  • People Asking For Free Birthday Drinks on Random Worst Things About Being A Bartend

(#15) People Asking For Free Birthday Drinks

While birthdays are really exciting, it is someone's birthday EVERY night. If your bartender gave out free shots every time someone was celebrating their birthday, they would never make any money.

(#16) People Asking You To Charge Their Phone

Please do your bartenders a favor and make sure you have a fully charged phone BEFORE you go out. Besides the fact that my job as your bartender is to make you drinks, I'm not your temporary Genius Bar. There is only one outlet, and I am currently using it.

    (#17) People Ordering Complicated Drinks

It can be fun to learn how to make new concoctions. But NOT when it is a Saturday night and the bar is at its busiest.
