In Road to Perdition, Tom Hanks plays Michael Sullivan, a hitman working for the Irish mob in Chicago. As Sullivan, Hanks turns in a performance unlike any before. Protecting his young son after he witnesses a crime, Sullivan is calculating and lethal as he goes on a tireless spree fueled by revenge.

As Sullivan looks to flush out his former employer John Rooney (Paul Newman), he holds a side arm to the head of mob lackey Jack Kelly (David Darlow). Kelly tells Sullivan not to be stupid - that he's only the messenger. Sullivan pauses before saying, "Then give Mr. Rooney a message for me." Sullivan then fires.

  • Turner & Hooch on Random Tom Hanks Roles When He Wasn't Nicest Guy

    (#9) Turner & Hooch

    • Tom Hanks, Craig T. Nelson, Mare Winningham, Reginald VelJohnson, John McIntire, Scott Paulin, J. C. Quinn, Beasley

The most important thing to come out of the 1989 movie Turner & Hooch is that it inspired Tom Hanks to reevaluate the direction of his career and instead take the types of roles that have catapulted him to becoming an Oscar winner. However, before Hanks could plot a course to glory, he still needed to act opposite a Bullmastiff.

Police officer Scott Turner is all set to move to a big city to fight real bad guys when his friend Amos Reed (John McIntire) is offed, and the only witness is his drooling beast of a dog, Hooch. With Turner now on the case, he is forced to protect the dog. Turner, a bit of a neat freak, soon loses his composure with Hooch, and even resorts to chasing him with his side arm.

Although Hooch is instrumental in Turner solving the case, you'll never hear Hanks scream at a dog quite the way he does in this film.

  • Bachelor Party on Random Tom Hanks Roles When He Wasn't Nicest Guy

    (#11) Bachelor Party

    • Tom Hanks, Tawny Kitaen, Michael Dudikoff, George Grizzard, Wendie Jo Sperber, Adrian Zmed, Deborah Harmon, Barry Diamond, Barbara Stuart, Tracy Smith, William Tepper, Robert Prescott, Martina Finch, Gary Grossman

Ever see a donkey do blow? Well, if you've watched the 1984 movie Bachelor Party, you probably have. Only four years after making his big-screen debut, Hanks was still looking to draw attention, even if it meant acting in a raunchy '80s comedy. As Rick Gassko, Hanks is the ultimate man-child living out his final night of freedom before getting married.

When asked by his bride-to-be Debbie Thompson (Tawny Kitaen) not to fool around with anyone at the bachelor party, Rick responds, "I swear on my mother's grave." When Debbie reminds Rick that his mother is still alive, Rick crassly answers, "Well, if I go back on my word, I'll [end] her."

  • The Ladykillers on Random Tom Hanks Roles When He Wasn't Nicest Guy

    (#3) The Ladykillers

In Joel and Ethan Coen's The Ladykillers, Tom Hanks plays Professor G.H. Dorr, a professional con artist that tries to charm his elderly landlady Marva Munson (Irma P. Hall). With the look and feel of a living, breathing cartoon character, Dorr is meticulously persistent in his off-the-wall measures while distracting Munson with a Southern drawl that is articulated beyond belief.

Following an explosion in the basement, Munson exclaims she is surprised by the ruckus. Dorr responds, "Well... uh... properly speaking, madam, we are surprised. You are taken aback. Though I do acknowledge that the sense that you intend is gaining increasing currency through its use, yes."

Eventually, Dorr and his crew decide they need to "off" the widow Munson as she is a potential witness to their criminal antics.

In A League of Their Own, Tom Hanks portrays Jimmy Dugan, a former major leaguer player turned heavy-drinking manager of a WWII-era women's baseball team. In the role, Hanks delivers a memorable performance as a washed-up ballplayer on the brink of a nervous breakdown, dripping with sarcasm and no hint of likability.

Using a quote still muttered by baseball analysts and fans alike, Hanks yells at sobbing rightfielder Evelyn Gardner (Bitty Schram), "Are you crying? ARE YOU CRYING? There's no crying! THERE'S NO CRYING IN BASEBALL!"

From telling an umpire that he looks like genitalia with a little hat on, to throwing a glove at Evelyn's son Stilwell, to signing a baseball for a young fan with the message, "Avoid the clap," Hanks's Dugan is a cranky caricature we don't often get to see him play.

  • Dragnet on Random Tom Hanks Roles When He Wasn't Nicest Guy

    (#8) Dragnet

    • Tom Hanks, Dan Aykroyd, Christopher Plummer, Shannon Tweed, Alexandra Paul, Dabney Coleman, Harry Morgan, Ava Fabian, Nina Arvesen, Kathleen Freeman, Elizabeth Ashley, Dona Speir, Peter Aykroyd, Bruce Gray, Jack O'Halloran, Casey Sander, Harry Perry, Jimmie F. Rhoads, Gray Daniels, Sharon Gilchrist, Joe Altmark, Marshall Maurice Mitchell, Jennifer Curry, Lori Leonelli, Chuck Thornton, Sandra Canning, Karen Criswell

In 1987, Hanks played Pep Streebek in the movie adaptation of the late-'60s television show Dragnet. At the tender age of 31, Hanks was the co-star to Dan Aykroyd's Joe Friday, which meant Hanks played a cocky young police officer who regularly pushes his partner's buttons.

In his teetering-on-annoying-but-still-funny portrayal of Streebek, Hanks jokes, quips, and even raps, as evident when he sings the Miranda rights as he detains Emil Muzz (Jack O'Halloran).
