About This Tool

The soil and groundwater at these Superfund sites in different states of the United States were heavily contaminated with heavy metals lead and cadmium. The site is large and used to be a lead smelter, where sulfuric acid from old car batteries is extracted, then crushed to treat and recover the lead. The EPA proposes an innovative approach to remediation of contaminated groundwater, in which harmless additives are injected into the water to absorb metals, rather than the traditional pumping of groundwater to the surface to remove contaminants. These methods, however, have had little effect.

To help with long-term cleanup efforts, the random tool documented a total of 56 Superfund Sites in the United States for guidance and to determine which Sites required further investigation for environmental remediation. The sites that need to be fixed in the generator take a lot of time, energy and money to clean up and restore the environment. To date, 413 sites have been cleaned up and removed from the site list.
