South Ossetia was an autonomous state under the Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic during the Soviet era. Declared independence in the 1990s, it was recognized by nine countries, including Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Nauru, with 8 of them having diplomatic relations. Like Russia, it has a two-chamber system, in which only 10 of the country’s 10 former house speakers are selected at random.

In the early years, they served a short term of one to three years, until a fixed term of three years was established and they could stand for re-election.
