About This Tool

The reform of 1832 consists of two major elements: (1) the redistribution of seats. Many already decrepit constituencies were eliminated, with some constituencies losing seats; more counties with growing populations gained seats, and more new industrial cities gained seats. Specifically: 56 cities with a population of less than 2,000 have lost their seats in the lower house, and 32 cities with a population of between 2,000 and 4,000 can retain only one seat. The remaining seats went to more populous counties and newly industrialized cities, which won 65 seats. (2) change of eligibility for election and expansion of the electorate. The demands of property and identity were lowered, the Industrial Bourgeoisie and the well-to-do peasants in the countryside were given the right to vote, and the number of voters was greatly increased. Around 16% of adult men in 1832 are eligible to vote.
