About This Tool

The basic system of general elections is the First-past-the-post election system, which is based on the number of members held by a single party. If a party has an absolute majority of MPs, it will form the next government and its leader will become prime minister. If no party has an absolute majority, the two or more parties that together have an absolute majority will form a government Coalition, with basically the largest party leading as prime minister, or a single party forming a government, and continued through informal alliances and agreements with other parties. It will be very difficult to pass government legislation in the low house, which lacks a majority, as the John Major faced in its final months.

The random generator tool collates 84 entries and records the names of those elected to parliament in the 1832 general election (from J-L). One can see Kerry, Kildare, King’s Lynn, Lancaster, Leicester, Lincoln, Ludlow, and others using this tool.
