Bihar is one of the largest states in India, with an area of more than 173,000 square kilometres and a population of 86.37 million (1991) . It is located in the north of India, bordering Nepal in the north, Bengal in the east, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh in the West and Odisha in the south. The state has some of the most fertile land in India. Seven rivers flow through the state, with hills in the middle and the Himalayas in the north.
