About This Tool

Malayalam, the language of the Malaya People (originally meaning “mountain people”) in the Indian state of Kerala, one of the languages recognized by the Indian Constitution. A member of the Dravidian languages, a close relative of Tamil, a language that diverged from Tamil in the 9th and 10th centuries. It has three dialects. About 22 million people use it. The earliest Malayalam texts date from the first half of the 12th century, when the official script evolved from Grantha, a Sanskrit script of the Tamil Nadu, and the cursive “Kolelutta” was adopted.
