About This Tool
The Republic of Macedonia is a region of the Balkans in southeastern Europe. The region includes independent Yugoslavia, the Macedonian region of northern Greece, and the southwest corner of Bulgaria. Since the founding of the Republic of Macedonia, it is generally referred to simply as “Macedonia”, but the Republic of Northern Macedonia and the region of Macedonia are two different concepts. The Greek side considers “Macedonia” to be a concept in Greek history, objection to the use of the name “Macedonian” by the Republic of Macedonia. In August 2009, talks between the two countries appeared to take a turn for the better, with the Greeks said to have accepted the Republic of Macedonia.
