About This Tool

From the 1880s to the 1890s, Lithuania began the Bourgeois “national awakening” movement. At this time, there appeared the writer and political commentator Kudilka (1858 ~ 1899), the poet Maillonis (1862 ~ 1932), and the poet marches-kekestas (1867 ~ 1902). They all expressed the democratic intellectuals’ desire for national liberation in their works. Remayitai (1845-1921) became a prominent figure in the 19th Century Lithuanian literary realism, writing about the hard life of peasants and exposing the rule of tsars and landlords and the tyranny of Catholic priests.
