No one is quite sure exactly what Elias Ainsworth is, but one thing is clear - he's not human. His typical form is a large, gangly black body with a cow skull for a head, though he's able to take on a humanlike appearance when he needs to blend in. Elias meets Chise Hatori, a human girl with incredible magical power, when he finds her for sale at a slave auction. He buys her, not with the intention of actually enslaving her, but with the intention of giving her the choice to learn magic from him - and, he hopes, eventually become his wife if she so chooses.

Though their actual relationship is slow to develop thanks to the trauma Chise endured before meeting Elias, the two eventually do develop a real relationship. While Elias provides Chise with physical safety, magical instruction, and a sense of belonging, she teaches him how to understand the human heart.

While this might seem like a terrifying situation, Nishiki is quite capable of not eating Kimi, and in fact, has dedicated himself to protecting her from other ghouls.

Why? Because while Nishiki was trying to blend into human society, he kept his identity as a ghoul a secret from everyone, including Kimi. When she ultimately found out, she accepted him and continued loving him, instead of turning him into the authorities as he feared. Their relationship seems almost impossible, but the two stay dedicated to each other despite the odds.

From the start, Tohru's feelings for Kobayashi go far beyond what one might expect from an employer-employee relationship - she's madly in love with her.

It takes Kobayashi a while to reciprocate and feel comfortable with Tohru's boisterous displays of affection, but by the end of the show they're holding hands and visiting each other's families.

After Lord Darcia III kidnaps Cheza with the intention of using her body to heal his wife's illness, she's rescued and ends up traveling with Kiba and his pack of wolves. (#12) Hideki Motosuwa & Chi - 'Chobits'

She can't download software like an ordinary Persecom would, which means that she has to learn about the world the way a human would - by learning from experience. What's more, Chi can feel human emotions, and even feel love, something that can't be said for most Persecoms. Those feelings are directed at the human being who got her up and running, Hideki Motosuwa. Their relationship is at the heart of Chobits, a show that interrogates whether or not it's truly possible for human beings and robots to form a genuine, mutual connection.

  • Ahiru & Fakir - 'Princess Tutu' on Random Interspecies Relationships in Anime History

    (#13) Ahiru & Fakir - 'Princess Tutu'

What would have been an unqualified happy ending is complicated by the fact that Ahiru now lives in the body of the animal that she was born as - a duck - and can no longer take on her preferred human form. Even though this means that the two of them can never have a normal physical relationship, they can still communicate, so Fakir decides to stay with her.

  • King Bradley & Mrs. Bradley - 'Fullmetal Alchemist' on Random Interspecies Relationships in Anime History

(#14) King Bradley & Mrs. Bradley - 'Fullmetal Alchemist'

King Bradley may look human, but he's actually a homunculus - Pride in the 2003 version of Fullmetal Alchemist, and Wrath in the 2009 version. He has a human wife. Not much is known about Mrs. Bradley, except that she's a kind, supportive person who King Bradley actually loves.

What's great about this couple is that their relationship shows a side of King Bradley that no other part of the series does. He may be a cruel despot who loves violence, but he's also capable of feelings that are more tender. The fact that he is capable of love doesn't excuse his villainous behavior, but it does deepen and complicate his character.

  • Yasaburo Shimogamo & Benten - 'The Eccentric Family' on Random Interspecies Relationships in Anime History

(#18) Yasaburo Shimogamo & Benten - 'The Eccentric Family'

Though their relationship ultimately falls apart before it truly gets started, the romantic tension between Benten and Yasaburo carries the show. Benten is a human being who was kidnapped by tengu, a birdlike mythological creature. The tengu taught her to fly, and also instilled in her a sense of superiority toward other species - including tanuki. Yasaburo is a tanuki, a raccoonlike being that can transform into any creature or object he chooses, but who typically takes on a human form.

Yasaburo is fascinated with Benten - he's captivated by her beauty, intrigued by the mystery that surrounds her, and willing to do nearly anything she wants. He feels this way even though she participated in cooking and eating Yasaburo's father and frequently laments the "fact" that she may one day have to eat Yasaburo too. Their relationship reveals Yasaburo's willingness to court danger in order to lead an interesting life, and Benten's intense loneliness. Though unhealthy, it's utterly fascinating.

In this moving film, Hotaru meets a forest spirit named Gin near her uncle's house. Gin warns her that she's not allowed to touch him as a human's touch would make him disappear forever. Despite the danger she poses to him, Gin becomes friends with Hotaru and she comes to visit him every summer throughout the years. During their time together, they both fall in love. But Gin can't even do simple things such as holding her hand. As a spirit who cannot survive a human's touch, their relationship is complicated. But their relationship proves that their love goes deeper than that.

  • Legosi & Haru - 'Beastars' on Random Interspecies Relationships in Anime History

    (#20) Legosi & Haru - 'Beastars'

In Beastar's society of anthropomorphic animals, breeding between two different species is looked down upon. And for Legosi and Haru's case, their relationship is even more forbidden given that Legosi is a carnivorous wolf while Haru, a white dwarf rabbit, is the prey. But that doesn't stop them from falling in love. Even though outside forces threaten their relationship, we can't help but root for this couple.
