Carolina Hurricanes were founded in 1972 as the hockey team. Its predecessor was the New England Whalers. It is an NHL team located in Riley and belongs to the Southeast Division now. In 1979 the team moved to Hartford and changed its name to Hartford Whalers. In 1997 the team moved again to North Carolina, renamed its current name. In the 2005-2006 season, the team won the Stanley Cup for the first time.
