  • Sullivan Is Lying To Everyone - Including Himself on Random Evidence Matt Damon's Character In Departed Is Secretly Gay

(#9) Sullivan Is Lying To Everyone - Including Himself

There isn't one character in The Departed who isn't lying about who they are, and that goes double for Sullivan. He's so deep undercover with everything in his life that he can't even sort out whether he's straight or not.

Jim Genzano says,"The gay subtext surrounding Matt Damon's character, and the more I think about it, the more I like this subtle addition to the movie. Damon's character is portrayed as a liar in every aspect of his life; of course he would lie about his sexuality, too, even to himself."

  • Sullivan's A Conservative Catholic In Boston, He Can't Admit He's Gay on Random Evidence Matt Damon's Character In Departed Is Secretly Gay

    (#11) Sullivan's A Conservative Catholic In Boston, He Can't Admit He's Gay

One thing that most armchair film critics seem to ignore about the subtext surrounding Sullivan's homosexuality in The Departed is the unspoken possibility that he was molested by his father figure Frank (and by at least one priest). While he may be gay, he's also conflicted about his feelings because of the molestation he suffered as a child.

The Departed takes place in 2006, which would make Sullivan a child in the late '70s/early '80s - prime time for Catholic priests in Boston to molest young boys. If you're making a movie that takes place in Boston and references the Catholic Church in the slightest, this isn't something that you can ignore. No one comes out and says that thousands of children (and possibly Sullivan) were molested, but they didn't have to.

This isn't to say that Sullivan is gay because he was molested. He was born gay, but because of the embarrassment caused by the molestation and growing up in a conservative city like Boston means that he's had to pile deception upon deception onto himself in order to appear to be "normal."

  • Sullivan Hides Everything Else, Why Not His Sexuality? on Random Evidence Matt Damon's Character In Departed Is Secretly Gay

(#6) Sullivan Hides Everything Else, Why Not His Sexuality?

Over on Rotten Tomatoes, there's an intense debate about whether or not Sullivan was gay. Most of the comments have to do with how Sullivan's closeted homosexuality is another layer of subtext to show that he's hiding who he is.

For some viewers the prospect that Matt Damon's Colin Sullivan might be gay is something that doesn't come up until subsequent viewings. Is it really that hard to pick up? Sullivan's closeted homosexuality is subtext, but it's not like it's a buried character trait that you have to spend hours reading into. In fact, for some viewers Sullivan's sexuality didn't make sense the moment he appeared on camera.

  • Sullivan Can't Perform Sexually on Random Evidence Matt Damon's Character In Departed Is Secretly Gay

    (#4) Sullivan Can't Perform Sexually

One of the biggest neon arrows pointing to the possibility that Matt Damon's character just might be gay is that he doesn't seem very interested in having sex with his girlfriend Madolyn, played by Vera Farmiga. It could be that he's tired from leading a double life, or maybe work has him stressed, or (as the visual clue of a peeled banana seems to suggest) he's gay.

  • There Are Multiple Gay Characters on Random Evidence Matt Damon's Character In Departed Is Secretly Gay

(#8) There Are Multiple Gay Characters

It's not just Matt Damon who's playing a gay character in The Departed, it turns out that one fan theory about the film is that both Damon's Collin Sullivan and Jack Nicholson's Frank Costello are both closeted homosexuals. About this theory writer Jim Emerson said, "Well, yeah, of course! Not that it's any great revelation -- especially for a director who's known for displaying rampant homoeroticism (in his "gangster pictures," especially) -- but there it is."

  • Sullivan's Clearly Putting On A Show When He Checks Out A Woman's Butt on Random Evidence Matt Damon's Character In Departed Is Secretly Gay

(#5) Sullivan's Clearly Putting On A Show When He Checks Out A Woman's Butt

Gay, straight, pan, omni, whatever-sexual - everyone loves butts. They're fun to look at! But one of the biggest pieces of evidence about whether or not Matt Damon is gay in The Departed comes from a scene where he takes an exhausting look at a female officer's behind as if to say, "Hey everyone! Check out my very heterosexual eyes, aren't they straight?!"
