(#1) Forpheus
This latest iteration of OMRON's cybernetic ping pong champion is nearly impossible to beat. Using five cameras, computer vision, and an advanced AI, Forpheus accurately predicts and anticipates human players' behavior. It's fully capable of handling forceful serves, and is even known to employ the occasional tricky spin. Forpheus is trained to coach you to be a better player by comparing your own moves to the moves it's seen professional table tennis players use.
(#9) Canbot
As far as functionality goes, Canbot is a pretty basic robot. It has WiFi, Bluetooth, and recognizes voice commands, and can play music from its speakers. It can also recognize faces and is pretty fond of swinging its arms around. Still, in terms of design, it's easily one of the more charming robots we had the pleasure of meeting on the convention floor.
(#7) HOBOT
This little wall-crawler is essentially a ROOMBA for your windows and tiles. The HOBOT uses vacuum technology to stick to glass surfaces — that vacuum is guided by an algorithm that senses just how much force needs to be applied to keep the robot from falling. Maybe you don't have enough windows to justify getting a robot to clean them all for you, but regardless, it was pretty cool to see this thing in action.
(#10) Swift
As a 15-foot long robotic arm on a wheeled base, Swift from IAM Robotics is not the most cuddly looking robot on this list, but it might be the one with the most potential to change the world. It's a highly efficient shelving robot, one that can do all the subtle sensing and manipulation needed for a task that is considered tedious by humans. It might not seem like much, but the ability to automate the work of stocking shelves and loading up warehouses could bring tremendous changes to the worlds of shipping, logistics, and retail. The arm picks up objects using suction rather than with fingers or a claw, which made it all the more eye-grabbing to watch as it moved products from one shelf to the other in its exhibition.
(#8) Leju
Like many of the robots on display this year, Leju is primarily meant to be a companion and to help educate users. It follows voice commands and will remember interactions with kids as they grow up. But most importantly, it's an incredible breakdancer. If the picture here doesn't convey this, take our word for it: Leju has serious moves.
(#5) Loobot
Loobot is a very small robot designed to interact mostly with very small humans. This edu-tainment toy communicates with kids through facial expressions and simple voice commands, and its semantic cloud computing technology allows it to get better and better at communicating over time. It also moves around on the rolling ball at its base, which reminds us quite a bit of another cute little droid.
